"Sakia Gunn (May 26, 1987-May 11, 2003) was a 15-year old African American lesbian who was murdered in a hate crime in Newark, New Jersey. On the night of May 11, Gunn was returning from a night out in Greenwich Village, Manhattan with her friends. While waiting for the #1 New Jersey Transit bus at the corner of Broad and Market Streets in downtown Newark, Gunn and her friends were propositioned by two men. When the girls rejected their advances, by declaring themselves to be lesbians, the men attacked them. Gunn fought back, and one of the men, Richard McCullough, stabbed her in the chest."

I posted this because it doesn't get as much exposure as the Matthew Sheppard tragedy.

11. yup. there are quite a few that happened that don't get as much

attention. I wonder why that is?(rhetorical question). there was one very brutal gay bashing murder in Alabama in the late 90's and a straight friend I knew from an atheist group (Alabama Freethought Association) down there attended the memorial service on behalf of the group and Fred Phelps and the "God Hates Fags gang" was picketing the memorial and he emailed me all freaked out about it because he had never heard of them before and couldn't believe people could be so vile.

anyway the man's name was Billy Jack Gaither and I just now googled his name and found out PBS Frontline did a story on him so this one DID get some attention after all. It happened in 1999.

15. i do remember this

and it should have gotten more attention. in fact from what i remember it was mostly on the blogs that i remember this being mentioned but not much or anything on tv.

i don't even know what the ones who killed her look like and what happened afterwards.
