Rice says "PEOPLE WORLDWIDE" thought Saddam had WMD's
Take your "luxury" and go away, DOCTOR Rice. You screwed up. Big time.

===

WASHINGTON (AFP) US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said here Sunday that the US-led war in Iraq will turn out to be a "strategic achievement" for not only President George W. Bush but for the United States.

Interviewed on Fox news, Rice said she "would give anything" to revisit the issue of weapons of mass destruction, but said the 2003 invasion was still right even if the weapons were never found.

"I still believe that the overthrow of Saddam Hussein is going to turn out to be a great strategic achievement, not just for the Bush administration, but for the United States of America," Rice told Fox...

But she said people worldwide suspected Saddam was hiding his weapons of mass destruction, as he had used them in the past.

"And so while it's fine to go back and say what might we have done differently, the truth of the matter is we don't have that luxury. And we didn't at the time," Rice said.

1. Apparently there are two "world's" on this planet...
Because more than half of them knew he didn't and thought we were crazy warmongerers and said so, in no uncertain terms.

19. Even for the majority of the ones that believed he did, came to
their senses a few days into the war. Hell, anybody with any common sense at all should have known. What is the reason for having WMDs in the first place, if you're not going to use them against an invading army? That should have been a wake up call to the willfully ignorant republican, but no, some chose to believe even a more ridiculous argument that Saddam moved them. Why would, he had moved them? Was he saving them for a rainy day? Once again proving without a doubt that using common sense is not a republican trait.

23. Saddam in the 80s gassed mainly Kurds
He didn't bomb them, but yes it was a despicable thing to do. BUT in the less than 7 years we have been there, we have killed over 5 times as many Iraqi civilians than is ESTIMATED in all of Saddam's years that he killed. Saving the country from a dictator or an excuse for genocide? I guess if you lived in Anbar you would have a differant answer

13. Raygun and Rummy gave the gas to Saddam to use on Iran
which he did, and with a little left over, on his own people. This all took place in the 1980s.

15. Why did Bush kick the UN Inspectors out of Iraq? If your justification
for going to war is the possibility of WMD, and only that, wouldn't you also consider the possibility that you are wrong? Wouldn't you let the inspectors finish their work? Wouldn't you be relieved by the possibility that you are wrong? Even if Saddam had WMD, would he have been so foolish as to use it against the US or our allies? Deterrence worked with the Soviet Union for 50 years, but it wouldn't with Iraq?

According to the aide, by the mid-1990s "it was common knowledge among the leadership" that Iraq had destroyed its chemical stocks and discontinued development of biological and nuclear weapons.

http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/archives/individual/20...

Thus, for seven or more years leading up to 2002 there were apparently no active WMD programs--and hence no new intelligence generated about active WMD programs. For some years prior to that any WMD intelligence was likely questionable in the wake of Gulf War I. Too many people involved to fake it. (Gosh, nobody has showed up for work at the WMD site for the past 8 years. Duh.) No way all the world's intelligence agencies were fooled for 7+ years.

You don't invade another country based on dubious 8-year-old intelligence.

Must be Condi's "Iraq was no threat to the US at the time or in the foreseeable future, but who knows it could have become a threat" Just War Doctrine.

30. Except for Powell and Rice pre 9/11
The occasion was a press conference on 24 February 2001 during Powell's visit to Cairo, Egypt. Answering a question about the US-led sanctions against Iraq, the Secretary of State said:

We had a good discussion, the Foreign Minister and I and the President and I, had a good discussion about the nature of the sanctions -- the fact that the sanctions exist -- not for the purpose of hurting the Iraqi people, but for the purpose of keeping in check Saddam Hussein's ambitions toward developing weapons of mass destruction. We should constantly be reviewing our policies, constantly be looking at those sanctions to make sure that they are directed toward that purpose. That purpose is every bit as important now as it was ten years ago when we began it. And frankly they have worked. He has not developed any significant capability with respect to weapons of mass destruction. He is unable to project conventional power against his neighbors. So in effect, our policies have strengthened the security of the neighbors of Iraq...

...

But Powell wasn't the only senior administration official telling the truth before the truth became highly inconvenient. On 29 July 2001, Condoleezza Rice appeared on CNN Late Edition With Wolf Blitzer (an anonymous reader sent me the full transcript from Lexis-Nexis). Then King asks her about the sanctions against Iraq. She replies:

But in terms of Saddam Hussein being there, let's remember that his country is divided, in effect. He does not control the northern part of his country. We are able to keep arms from him. His military forces have not been rebuilt.
