Poll question: i've had enough. POLL
i have a poll for you guys, and i also want to rant.

first, the rant.

i am SO tired of this BS with the protest of the atheist sign, and all the morons involved.

as an atheist i am offended each year by the senseless drivel from the religious right about how evil the atheists are, and how we're trying to ruin their consumerism, or x-mas, or whatever.

WHAT DO THEY NOT UNDERSTAND ABOUT "SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE"???

it's not complicated, keep the religious shit out of gov't buildings. it's not hard. it's simple. STOP.

NO TEN COMMANDMENTS
NO NATIVITY SCENES
NO MORE

if we can't have a sign pointing out our disagreements then maybe they shouldn't violate separation of church and state.

THEY should "get over it."

THESE PEOPLE ARE THE EPITOME OF HYPOCRISY.

it's hypocrisy that nativity scenes are allowed, but you never see Bhudda, Shiva, the FSM, Yoda, or any other religion.

It's repressive little shenanigans like this that makes me call bullshit.

if you can't handle the truth then maybe they should reevaluate their own ideologies and and try to figure out why some "evil" atheist would put something like that up. maybe they should engage in a pulic discussion, civilly, about religion, rather than accusing us of being malicious. excuse the fuck out of us for wanting to wake people up.

aaahhh. that's better.

now for the poll:

does the atheist sign deserve to be on display, alongside the nativity scenes, on gov't property?

Sorry, polls are turned off at Level 3.

1. Can't we just take down all the displays on gov't property?
Really, that makes the most sense to me.

WE HAVE A WINNER!!!!

Bob, tell'em what he's won!!!

well Brice, liberal Lurker has displayed a lifetime supply of common sense!!!

not sold in stores, and truly something to die for (as opposed to religiously incited wars).

with it's sleek style and easy handling, it's sure to catch the eye of every passer-by!!

THANK YOU for pointing out the most excellent solution.

i would almost bet that the people that put that sign up did so just so that it could be made obvious how much of a clear violation of separation of church and state it is that they have a nativity scene on gov't property to begin with. then once people complain about the atheist sign, POW, they can point out the hypocrisy, and raise the point it's a violation to begin with.

thanks Lurker!!!

edit: for spelling

8. Well, not ALL

I'd miss the secularized Pagan stuff like the trees with lights, the wreaths, the candy cane parking meters, the garlands of fake holly, and all the other Santa Claus Christmas rigmarole.

However, the cross and the creche belong in the church.

Once the overtly religious stuff is gone, I doubt any newly minted, militant atheist will feel compelled to put up a sign proclaiming disbelief.

11. Sorry, but the pagan symbols would have to go, too.
The trees, lights, holly, mistletoe, et lengthy cetera have survived because they were co-opted and "consecrated" by the Christians. And everyone knows their history, which means they've not been secularized yet. So, in fairness, they must go too.

5. Mainly people's intolerances and rudeness on both sides
Either side shouldn't say or claim as fact that the other is wrong or that people that don't think the same way are stupid.

Like the other poster said, get everybody's shit off tax payer's property and out of the schools while we're at it.

6. They should ALL be banned.
People can put up their displays of belief or nonbelief on their OWN property, at their homes and gathering places. ALL of them.

But government property should be for government and civic functions -- not religious proselytizing or display of ANY sort -- unless there's a special event for which they get a permit, just like anyone else.

9. I Don't Think It Deserves To Be There For A Second.
First of all, atheism isn't a religion. Second of all, the banner's only purpose is to infuriate, offend and cause disruption through needless provocation and spite. It is immature and shows the level of religious intolerance from the group who put it up. Shame on them and I hope they get frustrated time and time again.

That's my firm standing, and all the ad hominem, baseless or knee jerk attacks that may follow won't change a thing as to the reality of the situation.

10. interesting.
so, if it's not religious (because atheism is indeed not a religion), then why would it have no right being there? as it stands, it clearly has much more of a right to be there than the nativity scene.

13. Again/Still you misinterpret the 1st Amendment
It is as much about the freedom OF religion as the freedom FROM religion. Additionally the government can't get entangled in religion. Once they put up SOME religion symbols in the public square, the first amendment dictates that ALL SIDES get a voice. Just because my atheism is not a religion does not mean that I don't have an opinion ABOUT religion. If you don't want me to voice my opinion about religion, then keep the symbols on private property.

I don't think anything I have said is an ad hom, baseless, or knee jerky. I am interested to see if you can follow suit.
