So, OK, imagine you're down to the last known mating pair
of Republicans.

Do you let them go extinct, or do you put them on the Endangered list and try to breed them in captivity?

2. Depends.........
on whether you are trying to keep an absolutely pure blood line or not. Their offspring may be "pure", but they'll have to interbreed to survive.

It's all a matter of perspective.

4. I'm assuming the surviving pair is already pretty interbred.
Let's just say you couldn't make many slingshots out of the typical Republican family tree.

16. I like that image.
Especially since Rexie would be the only one in the tableau that appears capable of eating with utensils.

The last breeding pair means that their children would have to mate with
each other, not a good thing genetically I have been led to believe. You really need to save the last tribe, herd or flock to save an extinct species, or so they tell me.

15. Keep them seperate.
And make sure they get refresher courses on abstinance every day. No wait, that doesn't work. Just keep them locked up in separate cages.

I'm from Wisconsin. That kind of language brings all sorts of very twisted images to mind.
