Dems Give White House Ultimatum on Auto Bailout

<snip>
Democrats sent a clear message to the White House tonight - make some of the $700 financial industry bailout money available to the domestic auto industry or else. And they want an answer by Friday.

But in a letter Thursday night, Democratic leaders in the House and Senate told President Bush he must commit funds from either the TARP or the federal reserve or they will be unable to pass anything in Congress.

"Your decision to utilize the TARP funds, or to work with the Federal Reserve to make available assistance through its existing lending programs, or both, are essential to the Congress ability to address this critical economic situation in a timely manner, and would also eliminate the uncertainties inherent in the legislative process, " say Senate Makority Leader Harry Reid, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Democratic committee chairmen in the letter.

They go on: "We are very hopeful that we can work cooperatively with the Administration and the Federal Reserve to provide urgent assistance and support our domestic auto industry, just as other nations are doing, during this extraordinarily difficult global economic collapse. We look forward to hearing from you on an expedited basis, since we will be notifying colleagues tomorrow of next weeks session.

3. I beg your pardon. George said...it isn't his mess, it happened 10 years before
he took office. Doncha know?

If my memory is correct, that includes Daddy, right? However, Clinton was the most responsible. Everyone knows that! :sarcasm:

4. Sorry
I oppose a bailout for the Big Three US Auto companies. They are like drunks asking for 34 more bottles and they'll never drink again. Yea right, I'll bet they'll be back in 6 or less months for more. Bad management, bad business plan and rather inflexible union agreements require that they go through a pre-packaged bankruptcy to restructure.

11. I big rationalization for TARP was that "people won't be able to buy cars"
well, congress caved and handed the admin the money, and they have screwed yet another pooch. This "executive" branch cannot "execute" anything (except thousands of innocent bystanders).

Congress needs to just frigging rescind the TARP and do it over - appoint their own administrator for the funds. An actual economist. One of Obama's team.

Paper Tigers....Shit-for-Brains doesn't even have to come out from under his rock until the end of January if he doesn't want to.

This reminds me of that scene from Blazing Saddles where Clevon Little puts his own gun to his own head.......

you know the scene...
