She shows just how very stupid she is.

He did resign his Senate seat, after all...

I hold her in the highest contempt.

10. Technically, it's not a title.
It's a GSA designation. Kind of like "Mechanic" or "Pilot". In common use, it's simply a way to designate an un-inaugurated leader. Legally, it's simply a designation for the person authorized by the Presidential Succession Act to receive transition funding and training.

Not to defend Palin, but legally speaking, his current "legal" title within the U.S. Government would simply be "Citizen Obama". "President-elect" isn't a title or a position because it has no power or authority.

On the other hand, it's long been a tradition that former occupants of high level elected politicians get to retain those titles. That's why Bill Clinton is still "President Clinton" at large gatherings, and why former governors get to keep the Governor title even after they're out of office. That right has always been extended to senators as well, so calling him "Senator Obama" is technically NOT incorrect.

Palin is an idiot, but even a stopped clock is right twice a day.

12. I , and most other people, used the term "Title" with one of the
Edited on Tue Dec-02-08 03:54 PM by ladjf
most common uses of the term, i.e. "an appellation of dignity, honor, distinction, or preeminence attached to a person or family by virtue of rank, office, precedent, privilege, attainment, or lands b: a person holding a title especially of nobility" (Meriam-Webster m-w.com)

Further, President-Elect Obama resigned from the Senate a week or so ago. So, he is not a "Senator".

17. Different definition of title.
The definition of title that I've always used (which is also the one on Wiki) is that a title signifies either veneration, an official position or a professional or academic qualification. President-elects aren't venerated, it's not an official position, and it's not an academic qualification. You might make the argument that it's a professional qualification, but since it's a transitory term and isn't his actual profession, it really doesn't apply there either.

And resignation is irrelevant. Former senators retain the right to be referred to using the "Senator" title until death. Just as President's do. And no, I'm not just making this up off the top of my head...http://englishplus.com/news/news1200.htm.

16. No. Palin IS incorrect. We are talking here about normal usage not technical,
legal definitions.

And while Obama has a doctorate in Constitutional Law and you appear to have some related grounding, I would suggest that you are flattering Palin's level of tutelage, if you attribute to her a desire for legal exactitude.

21. "Doctorate" sounds ... so rarefied.
He has a J.D.

It's the typical terminal three-year professional degree that law students in the US get. Pretty much every lawyer is a "doctor" and has a "doctorate"; originally it authorized you to join a guild, and to teach. Hence "doctor", meaning "teacher". It qualifies you to ... teach in a J.D. program. In some states, I think, you need a J.D. to sit for the bar. Not in all. It's supposed to train you to be a good lawyer. FDR was a lawyer without a J.D., for example. Lots of J.D. graduates flunk the bar every year, to boot.

A J.D. not the equivalent of a Ph.D. And, yes, there are law programs with Ph.D.s, focusing not on the nuts and bolts of practicing law, but on research (a J.D. is a hybrid, much like an M.D. program). Those doctoral students will spend as much time working in just their specializations as Obama spent in his entire law-school career.

Most people are careful to distinguish between professional doctorates and research doctorates, and not to use the ambiguity to mislead.

of the original post you seek to defend. Knowledge of technical facts has its uses, of course, but we look for something a little more on here than the superficial. Hence the risible requirement for me to point out to you that Palin's use of the designation, Senator Obama, would have had precisely nothing to do with a predilection for pedantic, formal, legal exactitude. And still you maunder on with that dissertation on the distinctions between various legal titles and accreditations.

As a matter of fact (albeit, of a less rarified nature), I read that Obama was a professor. Perhaps that too was wrong. However, to be a lecturer at a law school requires a tad more nous than the Republicans are able to profer, by the look of things. What is clear, moreover, is that you felt no inclination to credit Obama in any way for the subtlety of his intellect. Something I would suggest you, yourself, could profitably make some effort to hone, before you invite further ridicule on here.

Expecting proper decorum from her is really pushing it, IMHO.

20. No, she's correct. The only body that has called the election is the media.
Edited on Tue Dec-02-08 05:13 PM by Kurt_and_Hunter
Not that she understands any of this, of course, but since she's right--even if accidentally--I'll save the outrage for more substansial things.

Senator Obama is the *presumed* president elect until the electoral college votes. That is a description, not a title.

After the electoral college votes he is the president elect until he is sworn in.

The only vote that matters is the electoral college. All we have done so far is elect delegates to the EC and they could all vote for Batman if the mood struck them.

I have no problem with the use of "president elect" right after election day, but it's just something people do, not proper protocol.

Of course, he has resigned his senate seat but the honorific remains in all cases EXCEPT President and VP.

It is correct protocol (as if anyone cares these days) to call Bill Clinton Governor Clinton and GHW Bush Ambassador Bush because there is only one president and when you leave office you are SUPPOSED to revert to the highest rank other than president. And Ambassador is higher (in protocol) than congressman or CIA director, which is why Bush I should be called ambassador Bush.

Senator Gore. Senator Quayle. Governor Bush. Representative or Secretary Cheney... I forget which is higher. Justice Taft. General Eisenhower (?) I don't know the protocol on military ranks. (Was General Marshall properly called Sectretary Marshall after he left SoS?)
