Clinton said to be unsure about Cabinet job

WASHINGTON - Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York has reservations about accepting an appointment as secretary of state in the Obama administration, an adviser to Mrs. Clinton who is familiar with her thinking said on Tuesday.

The adviser described Mrs. Clinton as flattered by President-elect Barack Obama’s interest but said she was agonizing over the decision. Mrs. Clinton likes being her own boss and is reluctant to give up the independence that comes with that, said the adviser, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the process was at a delicate stage.

“If you are secretary of state you work for the president,” the adviser said in an e-mail response to questions from The New York Times. “If you are a senator, you work for yourself and the people that elected you.”

1. If she's not sure, she shouldn't take it.
This isn't something you do on an "oh what the hell" basis. If she has reservations about working under Obama's authority, that's pretty much a deal-breaker for me.

Maybe that's the best resolution here, Obama looks gracious offering, and Hillary politely declines. I don't hate her but do worry about how much potential for distractions and factionalism there is if she takes State.

2. If I was Senator Clinton, I would remain as Senator... Its a seat for life and
effects change the most.

3. Um...you either really want it, or you don't. Is she seriously dithering on this?

4. I know, we don't have time for political theater anymore.
That was the primaries and there was too much of it then too.

6. I know a woman who, for many years, played in a symphony orchestra until one day she realized that,
no matter how beautiful the music, she was interpreting notes that someone else wrote.

So she became a poet, creating her own music, and is nationally renowned.

Putting politics aside and based on personality alone, I think Hillary would rather be a poet than play in an orchestra.

7. Senator Kennedy just asked Hillary to help on Universal Healthcare
She would be best suited for that since she has been so involved with wanting to launch that program.

8. Maybe Teddy knows she would be a mistake as SoS. Thanks, Ted.

10. I doubt that Ted
thinks that offering that old Health Care situation would be something that Hillary would rather have than SOS. You are dreaming. She would be great as SOS.

11. Well, we differ. I think she would be a poor choice for SoS.

15. I don't think she's intentionally dithering, I think that during the vetting process...
...they are coming up with issues, probably related to Bill's financial dealings (both in the past and, the future), exacerbated by the fact that they share a joint bank account, are causing some very tough choices to be made in the Clinton household.

16. Ignore the "media" on this...
Obama and Clinton are MUCH better at explaining this than the media;
they will work together...
w/her at State or the Senate.
