My evening in the belly of the beast: Visiting the RW friends
Okay. We've known this family for thirteen years now. We love them, we love their kids, we consider them some of our closest friends. One problem: They're Republican to the tenth power. We don't talk to them about politics anymore, because we'd like to remain friends.

I did what other posters here have done. I smiled, I said nothing outrageous, and I listened carefully. After all, we have the White House for the next 16 years at the least, our governor is a Democrat, we have two Democratic senators, and we have the upper hand. It was fascinating to hear from the other side. The best part? There was a person there this evening that is a former local RW radio personality, and now holds a very public job in our state government. I had to laugh -- he took the "true believers" into another room to share the latest RW talking points. Oooh, was he scared of the big, mean liberal?

The next part may not be interesting to anyone but those living in Washington State.

This is what I learned: He claims that the "hardest part of his job" is dealing with Governor Christine Gregoire's office. After all, she's "tense and unhappy", and so is her staff. I smiled (again) and said that I've met the Governor twice now; I've always found her to be friendly and helpful, and she did a lot for consumers in Washington State while she was the attorney general.

According to him, Dino Rossi (R-Neanderthal) is planning on running for Senator Patty Murray's Senate seat.

LMAO,
Julie

1. You're a democratic gem! I don't know if I could have conducted myself with such magnanimity.
Thanks for the scoop on a Washington State political soiree. :-) :hi:

It was fairly obvious to me that Mr. Former RW Radio Personality was spoiling for an argument; I didn't give him one.

It must be cold where they're living right now, don't you think?

Julie

p.s. Oh, yeah: I brought the following up: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=389&topic_id=4329324 I noticed that seemed to take the wind out of his sails...

2. No way could he get Patty Murray's seat
Dino really should take 'no' for answer and let it go.

4. Oh, we all know this
Let Dino spend his money. With all the crap that went down re: the governor's race, I'll be shocked if he could be elected dog catcher...

6. They're Christians
They listen to RW radio daily. I was expecting World War III to break out over President-Elect Obama, but again, what can they say to us? Three-fourths of the country have repudiated Bush and the Republican brand.

They've known us for years. They know we are Democrats. They know we do not listen to Rush Limbaugh, Michael Medved, Dr. Laura, any of it. Trust me -- if there was a way to get through to them, I would try, but they also believe Christian = Republican.

7. Hi Julie
I've written to you before. I live in Tacoma...just this Saturday we held a big rally at our church against Proposition 8 and more to the point in favor of equality in marriage for all! Anyway...I guess I am not as magnanimous as you are. I have in laws who spent the past from 2000-2006 until the Democrats re-took the House and Senate rubbing my face in the fact that we were the minority party...that we were unpatriotic and that we would become conservative when we grow up.

Saturday after the election..I invited them for dinner...Obama material and signs all over the house..tapes of his speeches playing on the sound system that runs though our house. Finally about a third into dinner..I let it rip...how unprofessional and immature and unpatriotic conservatives are and how they cling to their guns and religion and just haven't had the education to truly know the correct way to treat others. I got a big fuck you and up and out they went.

I am very active politically..have put myself out a limb for many liberal causes for the past 27 years..so I am not just an armchair quarterback in this. My wife backed me up all the way. When they left, we laughed so hard. Hopefully that's puts to rest any family reunions we'll have to attend.

My question..all this time (since Reagan was elected) I have had to sit through their judgemental bullshit and because we were the "younger" of the generations and in the political minority, we were expected to take it. We fought back verbally, but not once did we up and leave a social situation with them. So, I think they owe us an apology! Not only for skipping out on dinner (dessert was going to be served with a film review of his speech in Grant Park) but they owe us an apology for fucking up the past 28 years and screwing over our children for at least the next 28 years.

It feels good to be on the winning side!!! BTW Rossi is now a time loser he neds to STFU and crawl back into the hole he climbed out of!
