Poll question: Should the Obamas accept the dog from Peru?
Edited on Wed Nov-12-08 06:47 AM by ColbertWatcher
A dog lovers group, the "Peru's Friends of the Hairless Dog Association," offered a four-month-old puppy named "Machu Picchu" (alternately called http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7721784.stm">"Ears") to the Obama family after hearing they were looking to get a hypoallergenic dog for their daughters (only one daughter, Malia, is allergic).

Should the Obamas accept the puppy (pictured below) from Peru?

1. Other. Just No.
The girls want a Labradoodle. I think they should have that. Much cuter and hypoallergenic too.

I wonder why they think Obama would like that!

I hope they get a shelter dog, too.

The girls would not want a mature dog, especially an ugly one. Sorry.

They want a puppy - period. They are children, and their greatest wish has become a political minefield: adopt a mutt, adopt a dog from a shelter, a bichon is great for people with allergies but is too 'elitist'. Enough! Let the children have whatever pet they want.

And I don't think the dog is fugly, but this is certainly not the sort of pet two little girls would want. Get them a shelter dog - one that would be saved from the gas chamber.

21. People need to meet a dog before selecting it
What is the general personality of these dogs? Are they overly protective? Will it fit into a busy household with many visitors? How trainable are these dogs? The thing that bothers me about this pick is that whatever dog they pick everybody will want one just because the Obamas have one.

When 101 Dalmations came out, everybody wanted a dalmation, and a lot of dalmations ended up in shelters and rescues because people wanted one because the puppies were so cute and knew nothing about the personality traits of dalmations or the energy level.

I volunteer for a rescue, and we end up with tons of 6 month old puppies in the spring when those cute little puppies start growing up. These are the ones that were purchased for Christmas and the parents picked a dog without knowing what the dog would be like when it grew up. Some people buy a puppy and don't realize that you have to put a lot of work in with training and socialization to end up with a good dog.

I doubt this will be a problem with the Obamas as they will have tons of White House staff who will be able to take care of some of these things, but most people don't have that kind of staff. Sorry, I didn't mean to type this much, but I think that careful thought should be put into the choice.

26. Absolutely right there minime
An animal is a living being and should be selected for how it gets along with the owner and what the owner wants in a dog. Definitely not because of it's looks or popularity.Make the right choice and have a friend for life.

Oh, that's so true!

I guess, no matter what they do, it will be twisted through some kind of political filter.

24. They should get whatever hypoallergenic PUPPY they want.
Edited on Wed Nov-12-08 08:40 AM by eowyn_of_rohan
Dogs bond best with their people when they are acquired at about 7 weeks of age. A dog that is not well-socialized with people, due to past abuse or neglect, might not fit well with 2 young girls, or in the White House, with so many employees and visitors. The ideal dog for the Obamas would be a 7-8 week old hypoallergenic puppy. It would be great if they could find this kind of dog at a dog pound or rescue shelter, but who are we to tell them where they have to get their dog?

28. That pup is adorable!
I've seen this breed in person at dog shows, and I love them - very soft and warm to the touch. I like unusual breeds, though.

Should the Obamas accept the pup? Only if they see the pictures and fall in love. People's aesthetics differ, and hairless breeds obviously don't appeal to everyone, judging from some of the replies in this thread.

says you can't have two White House dogs. Accepting this dog would be a nice gesture and they can still get a shelter dog.
