Militants attack U.S. supplies in northwest Pakistan

By Ibrahim Shinwari / Reuters

LANDIKOTAL, Pakistan - Militants in northwest Pakistan hijacked 13 trucks carrying supplies for Western forces in Afghanistan on Monday as they passed through the Khyber Pass, a government official said.

Most supplies, including fuel, for U.S. and other Western forces battling a Taliban insurgency in landlocked Afghanistan are trucked through neighboring Pakistan, which is also facing growing militant violence.

Security along the road leading to the border has deteriorated this year and soldiers carried out a sweep in part of the Khyber region in June to push militants back from the outskirts of Peshawar, the main city in the northwest.

The trucks were seized at four places along a 35 km (20 mile) stretch of the road, said a senior government administrator in the Khyber region.

"About 60 masked gunmen popped up on the road and took away the trucks with their drivers. Not a single shot was fired anywhere," the official, Bakhtiar Mohmand, told Reuters.

1. Took the trucks and drivers. Well, they'll be finding some dead
bodies along the road soon I suspect.

I can't help but wonder what plans Obama has for the Afganistan/Pakistan problem. We can't keep killing civilians but we need to come to the realization that Pakistan is a serious problem for us. We gave them nuclear weapons and half of their government wouldn't mind using them on us.

What a dilemma this problem will be.

2. Pakistan?
But we're not at war with Pakistan! Why is our good friend and ally allowing this to happen to us? My goodness, we should cancel the results of the last so-called election and give George W. another few months, up to two years (or so) to sort all this out. I'm sure he'll see as much success as he has in the Middle East with the Palestinians and the Jews. Calling Dr. Rice!

On a (slightly) more serious note, everybody try to remember that this happened two months BEFORE Obama was sworn in. Because with the usual telescoping of memory, some people will try to convince the public that everything was hunky and dory in Pakistan until that Awful, Awful Man took over the Oval Office. They keep trying to hang Somalia on Clinton, even though it was Old George who sent the troops in at the last moment before he scooted his old ass out of office.
