The McCain camp wanted to use the Ayers issue. They had plans, a strategy for introducing Ayers into the campaign. But, Sarah bollixed that with her unexpected "palling around with former terrorists" speech. She pre-empted McCain (her President!) to do it her way.

She also took to refusing to appear with politicians of her own party whose social views differed from her own. She wouldn't let Sununu and Bradley take the stage with her in NH. So after a blistergram from HQ, she shared the stage at a second event... but wouldn't acknowledge them.
