There seems to be a doubt as to which congressman acted the most immorally. In my mind I don't think there is a comparison, but that's the word out round these parts. The word is that Foley is all fine and rehabiliated and not sending emails to young pages. I am not sure that is just immoral, I think it should have been further investigated.
There seems to be a dual standard for Democrats and Republicans in this state. Tim Mahoney is the one Pelosi wanted to investigate. He is the one who had multiple affairs and lost his seat this election...the one he took from Mark Foley.
It just plain gets weird here.
Mark Foley's comeback tourBlogger Marc Ambinder of The Altantic reports that Florida congressional District 16’s original scandal-shamed representative, Mark Foley (not to be confused with scandal-shamed incumbent Tim Mahoney), will appear on NBC’s Today show next week.
More on the topic from the
Philly News Examiner. Foley resigned Sept. 29, 2006, after ABC News' Brian Ross published sexually charged IM exchanges between the Florida Republican and underage male congressional pages, including one that will live in Capitol Hill infamy. The scandal hit right before the 2006 midterm elections and heralded the end of GOP dominance on Capitol Hill. Foley, previously the chairman of the House Caucus on Missing and Exploited Children, had led initiatives cracking down on online child predators, in one interview calling those offenders "sick people." Polls indicated that Foley's behavior, which was apparently covered up by Republican House leaders, cemented an impression among voters that the GOP was hopelessly corrupt. Democrats took control of the House and Senate for the first time in George W. Bush's presidency that November.
Following his resignation, Foley delivered the excuse du jour and entered rehab.....This past September, Florida law enforcement officials finally wrapped up an investigation into Foley's communications and announced they would not press charges. According to the Atlantic, Foley is "sober, he's not blaming his problems on alcohol, he's kibitzing about Florida politics, and he's eager to speak."
There's something in the water in Florida's 16th District. Foley's successor, Democrat Tim Mahoney, was felled on Tuesday following his own sex scandal. Mahoney admitted to "multiple" extramarital affairs, his wife is divorcing him, and the feds are investigating whether he broke any laws or misused federal money for his former mistresses.
One investigation down, one to go. There really must be something in the
FL 16 water.West Palm Beach Congressman Tim Mahoney (D-FL), whose predecessor resigned in the wake of a sex scandal, agreed to a $121,000 payment to a former mistress who worked on his staff and was threatening to sue him, according to current and former members of his staff who have been briefed on the settlement, which involved Mahoney and his campaign committee.
..."Emanuel did confront Mahoney "upon hearing a rumor" about an affair in 2007 and "told him he was in public life and had a responsibility to act accordingly." The spokesperson added that it was a "private conversation" that had nothing to do with Mahoney's re-election prospects."
I don't judge anyone on their private life, but I will say what a heck of a time for this to surface.
I do judge what Rahm Emanuel and Florida Democratic chairman, Karen Thurman, did in late 2005 in this district. They forced a good Democrat out of the race to put in a Republican millionaire to run for Mark Foley's seat. They should not have done that.
Welcome back to public life, Mark Foley....I guess.
