Did you know the Mormons own Safeway?
It might be time to boycott the Mormons money. I'm sure serious researchers could find more that the Marriot Hotel chain and Safeway in their holdings.
Picketing might even be an interesting excercise.
Just a thought. Let me know yours.

I have two grocery chain choices near my home... I sure as hell am not boycotting or refraining from one that employs so many in my neighborhood based on an incredible accusation such as this...

Hell, everytime some posts about XM radio, there continue to be posts screaming they would "never purchase xm because Rupert Murdoch owns it... the truth-- Murdoch has had no or at least no major holdings in the company for years...

30. sorry...you are correct
I should have checked more thoroughly. Safeway was founded by mormons, but is currently owned by Kohlberg Kravis Roberts. A long time mormon gave me this info...and she suggested the boycott. I should have checked. Safeway is my neighborhood store also. Albertson's mormon owner changed religions in 1999.http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20081020144...

10. J. W. Marriott, Jr. is a Mormon.
He is an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In an episode of 60 Minutes airing on April 7, 1996 Marriott was interviewed by Mike Wallace regarding his faith alongside football star, Steve Young, and church leader, Gordon B. Hinckley. Marriott is currently serving as an Area Seventy and is a member of the LDS Church's Sixth Quorum of the Seventy.

IIRC, most Marriott franchise opportunities are with the less expensive chains like Courtyard or Fairfield.

Adult entertainment might be an exception. But I seriously doubt that the church would take ownership of a retail or wholesale liquor enterprise.

26. Well, the LDS Church was a big bank-roller of that hateful Prop. 8 out in California. But then again...
I've heard rumors that the Catholic Church had a hand in supporting it, too, and that puts me in a very awkward position. Being a liberal Catholic seems to always mean saying "I'm sorry," to coin a phrase.

I hope that's not true, but there have been some posts about it.

24. First job I ever had was sacking groceries for Safeway. I don't think they're owned by the Mormons.
For one thing, they sell liquor, wine, and beer. For another, they're Union. Two Mormon no-no's.

Besides which, the entire two and a half years I worked there I never heard a thing from any of my co-workers about any kind of Mormon connection.

I just don't think this OP is accurate.

EEOC, Desert Schools settle discrimination suit
Phoenix Business Journal

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has settled its class religious and race discrimination lawsuit against Desert Schools Federal Credit Union for $65,000 and other relief, EEOC officials said Wednesday.

The EEOC had charged the credit union with discriminating against a class of employees because they were not members of the Mormon church and/or because they were African-American.

The discrimination, at various Desert Schools locations in Arizona, the EEOC alleged, included the refusal to promote more qualified black or non-LDS employees to the position of assistant branch manager and subjecting non-Mormon employees to a religiously hostile work environment.

In addition to the paying the monetary fee, Desert Schools also agreed to strengthen its policies prohibiting race and religion discrimination and to provide training on race and religious discrimination to its employees, supervisors, and management.

Desert Schools Federal Credit Union, founded in 1939, has more than 270,000 members in Gila, Maricopa and Pinal counties.

45. Don't worry. The Mormons don't own Safeway.
The OP is in error. But, if you're near a Costco and you don't have a membership, I highly recommend getting one. Costco is one of the "bluest" companies out there. If you don't mind buying things in bulk, even if it's only paper goods and other non-perishables, they almost always have the best prices.

As far as corporate contributions go, I think Safeway is a pretty "red" company. Red companies are almost impossible to avoid since businesses in this country tend to be so pro-Republican. That's why I love Costco.

46. STOP: You are confusing Safeway with Albertson's.
SAFEWAY IS NOT OWNED BY THE MORMONS and you should be careful before making such wild statements as people might believe them and punish innocent companies.

SAFEWAY, VON'S & STATER BROTHERS are the last California-based large grocery stores and I urge all Californians to patronize these over others.

ALBERTSON'S WAS FOUNDED AND OWNED BY THE MORMONS. Albertson's was bought by American Stores. There may still be a large investment by Mormons in Albertsons so this bears some investigation.
