It would be nice if government got out of the marriage business altogether. But that's not going to happen, and if the government is going to recognize marriage, then it can't do it for only a certain group of people.
Calling it a "civil union" is not enough. Even if gays and lesbians got all of the same rights as married heterosexual couples (which they don't, but for argument's sake), by saying theirs is a "union" while mine is a "marriage" is demeaning, insulting, and not equal.
When black people were forced to drink at the "colored" fountain, was that acceptable? Saying gays and lesbians should have civil unions while heterosexuals get married is tantamount to that. Even if the white fountain and the black fountain were identical, you're still separating one group of people from another, all because the majority is a group of ignorant, hateful bigots.
Separate is not equal.
