1. I like Jensen a lot, but I wouldn't count on it
I'm afraid he's way too out there for Barack. Keep in mind that Obama supports "clean coal," an oxymoron to be sure.

2. LOL I can picture it now.
Derrick Jensen: Mr. President, will you help me in my goal of destroying civilization? Can we count on your support in that endeavor?

President Obama: Security!!

Don't get me wrong, I love many of Derrick Jensen's ideas. I just disagree with his proposed methods. I think we need to change civilization, not destroy it.

3. Jensen is viewed today as Nader was 40 years ago.
First they laugh
then they resist
then they accept
or something Ghandi quote.

I agree with you that his ideas are very important.

I must missed the part where he wants to destroy civilization.

4. Ummm..... Did you read Endgame?
Edited on Fri Nov-07-08 03:38 PM by Herdin_Cats
I read it before it was published, on Derrick's reading list, so maybe he toned it down a bit before publication. I was on his email list for a while, even though I disagree with his main goal, just because I love his books.

Edited to add: This is from the Publisher's Weekly review of the Endgame. From this I gather that he didn't tone it down much.

From Publishers Weekly
But Jensen believes "this culture will not undergo any sort of voluntary transformation to a sane and sustainable way of living." Civilization, he says in volume II, is killing the planet, so "ivilization needs to be brought down now." Jensen dwells through several chapters on the need to destroy tens of thousands of river dams, whether with pickax-wielding citizen armies or through the use of well-placed explosive charges; other chapters consider how simple it would be to paralyze the American capitalist system if small activist cells were to disrupt railway, highway, pipeline and other elements of commercial infrastructure.
