Rick Warren of Saddleback Church emailed congregation "Yes on 8!" - PROTEST INFO
Edited on Thu Nov-06-08 07:48 PM by Bluebear
Saddleback Church Prop 8 Protest!

No one's religious beliefs should be used to deny fundamental rights to others," said Lorri L. Jean, chief executive officer of the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center. "Our civil rights are inalienable."

This peaceful protest will take place this Sunday (November 9th) at 10AM PST. Please spread the word!! Prop 8 is unfair and unconstitutional. A church's definition of marriage should not be allowed to be applied to the whole population. Rick Warren of Saddleback Church came out publicly in an email to his congregation telling them to Vote Yes on 8.

Please bring your friends - gay or straight. Christian or not. All who support marriage equality are encouraged to come show their support in front of one of the largest churches in America. Bring your signs if you have them!

7. Not gonna happen.
It is generally legal for churches to stand against propositions etc - just cannot endorse or go against a candidate.

8. So it is time to start taxing these churches
they get to use tax free money to participate and impact laws they need to pay up.

15. We need to eliminate the politicization of religion
Edited on Fri Nov-07-08 05:29 PM by aint_no_life_nowhere
Any church that openly engages in the political process should have their tax exemption revoked. If the federal government supports a religious institution by offering a tax exemption when that relgious institution actively and systematically seeks to establish its religious doctrine through political activity, it sounds to me like a violation of the Constitution's establishment clause. The U.S. government should not be complicit in that activity by supporting it through its taxation power. Maybe there's been case law on this, but perhaps that case law should be revisited.

18. I guess I look at this a little different than most of you.
At least different than what you have expressed and I hope this all makes sense.

First of all, I don't believe in organized religion. And by that I mean any religion that takes on the identity of an organization.

Second of all, I don't think that 'churches' as big as Saddleback should be recognized as tax exempt because they are businesses, and not really religious sites. Any time you have a business report given out to the congregation, then that takes away the tax exemption.

Thirdly, religious groups should not be involved in businesses, especially Christian religions. Nor should they be part of the government. To me, this is part of the teaching of Jesus and he is who they called Christ and on whom they built their religion.
The Christian religion should be true to the teachings of Jesus, which these religions based on business and tv evangelicals are not. Their focus should be on charity and good works and not on making money and government policy. Their missionary work should be done by setting an example, not by setting an agenda.

Finally, in this I agree with you all. Religion should not be involved in government and its legislations. If you don't believe in it, don't do it. Preach, teach against it as part of you beliefs, but do not impose your beliefs on others. No one has the right to set moral standings for others. If a behavior carries no harm to others, then that leaves it to judged by societies morals not its legal standings. JMHO
