Scorched Earth
If any Democrat tells you that there was no sense to impeaching Bush over the next 72 hours, show them this. It's really, really bad.

The White House is working to enact a wide array of federal regulations, many of which would weaken government rules aimed at protecting consumers and the environment, before President Bush leaves office in January.

The new rules would be among the most controversial deregulatory steps of the Bush era and could be difficult for his successor to undo. Some would ease or lift existing constraints on private industry, including power plants, mines and farms.

Those and other regulations would help clear obstacles to some commercial ocean-fishing activities, ease controls on emissions of pollutants that contribute to global warming, relax drinking-water standards and lift a restriction on mountaintop coal mining.

Once such rules take effect, they typically can be undone only through a laborious new regulatory proceeding, including lengthy periods of public comment, drafting and mandated reanalysis.

1. Impeach Bush...so we can get President Cheney ???
I agree this is really really bad and I don't think Congress has the leadership capability to impeach both of them. Impeaching Bush is the same as pulling back the curtain on the Wizard of Oz...instead of Cheney making all the decisions from the privacy of his VP office, he'll be doing it in the spotlight of the Presidency, if even for only 60-ish days.

Congress needs to get it's collective ass back to Washington and in session to prevent this BS. I'm sure that it goes much deeper than any report and Cheney is planting legal/policy landmines throughout the government that will impact us for years/decades.

Can you tell who I think has really been in charge here for the last 8 years.

2. I'm getting rather tired of all this "But-but-but" business
If Bush were impeached and removed from office, the Cheney problem would take care of itself. I think you and I both know why.

3. Can they do this without congressional approval?
I don't see why congress would go along with any of it.

4. Much of it can be done via executive order
Did you know that the only reason that health-related employee lawsuits cannot be filed against the "Area 51" installation is because of an executive order that is renewed without fail every year? Kinda scary.

5. But that has to be renewed every year, ...
... which would mean the next president could easily reverse these orders.
