Both sides of aisle rip MSNBC
Keith Olbermann also criticized at media luncheon
By Paul Bond
Oct 27, 2008, 08:26 PM ET

In a room full of television industry executives, no one seemed inclined to defend MSNBC on Monday for what some were calling its lopsidedly liberal coverage of the presidential election.

The cable news channel is "completely out of control," said writer-producer Linda Bloodworth-Thomason, a self-proclaimed liberal Democrat.

She added that she would prefer a lunch date with right-leaning Fox News star Sean Hannity over left-leaning MSNBC star Keith Olbermann.

Olbermann was criticized by many who attended Monday's luncheon sponsored by the Caucus for Producers, Writers & Directors at the Beverly Hills Hotel. The event was dubbed "Hollywood, America and Election '08."

Bloodworth-Thomason and others seemed especially critical of the way MSNBC -- and other media -- has attacked Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin while demeaning her supporters.

...Bloodworth-Thomason even suggested a defense of Palin and her supporters should be written into TV programming, just as she went out of her way to portray Southern women as smart in her hit TV show "Designing Women."...

1. To think that I used to respect Linda Bloodworth-Thompson
for "Designing Women."
Silly me. I wonder if this will cost her viewership in syndication. I know I'll avoid those reruns like the plague.

4. Linda Bloodworth-Thomason is a friend of the Clintons
which immediately causes me to question her 'liberal' credentials.

5. NO! Wasn't this woman a big Clinton supporter, Bloodworth-Thomason?
Edited on Tue Oct-28-08 10:26 PM by babylonsister
Didn't she and her husband work for the Clintons?

What is the slant of this 'report'?

7. Clinton supporters have not gotten over the primary. And they
feel that KO supported Barack.

Since my original candidate was neither Clinton or Obama, I find their "hurt" feelings repugnant. The Clintons have been out on the campaign trail giving their all for the Democratic Party candidate. Any Clinton "supporter" who doesn't is betraying the Clintons, IMHO.

10. KO did support Obama. But most people have gotten over it. I'm
astounded this woman is taking this tact, considering what an airhead Palin is. I can't even imagine Senator Clinton supporting this, but she could have asked to not have it happen. I don't get it. Again.

8. And the foaming at the mouth on Fox is okay???
Umm, and doesn't MSNBC have Scarborough??? Now THERE'S a liberal. And CNN Headline News has Glenn Beck ...

The silliness of all of the media hype is getting on my last nerve.

I guess all the racist comments about Obama are just FINE with Bloodworth-Thomason...

9. Linda Bloodworth-Thomason--dead to me! (snark).
Portraying southern women as smart as she did on Designing Women, beauty queen/debutante/belle stereotype in full force in the Delta Burke character and the "country bumpkin" stereotype in full force with the Jean Smart character, is different from portraying the person, Sarah Palin, as smart, in that southern women come in all shapes and sizes and types and backgrounds and education and have a wonderful rich diversity. One can draw on any facet of any number of women to draw fabulous characters.

And Sarah Palin is what she is. A faux-reformer and an accessory, in this campaign, to McCain's "maverick" style. That's not necessarily representative of feminism--to be used as "flair"? And her supporters, the people who show up at her rallies, are in some instances, no better than they truly ought to be.

Now, I will not imply here that Palin is stupid or that her supporters are necessarily bigoted--I think she is underinformed and her supporters feel she represents their values. She may be shrewd, and voting your values is a valid response. But on the whole, I do not think she is qualified, honest, or "clean" in the sense of how she will conduct herself in any given office, and I think her supporters are as bad and worse than the most starry-eyed Obamamaniac in thinking personality wins out. The Obama-fan at least can point to their candidate's education and resume. The Palinista has--just her own instant-iconic presence, like some visitation of the Madonna of the Oil Fields.

I also can not fathom preferring a lunch-date with Hannity over Olbermann. Perhaps she hasn't quite picked up on Hannity's subtle racism or Olbermann's intellect. But I could be biased, because I fantasize about Keith Olbermann. Occasionally. Did I type that out loud?

Ah, well. Like MSNBC I may be biased. But I aim to be accurate. :)

14. Thanks for that, but this woman is nuts now, if she's supporting Palin,
for any reason, after supporting Clinton. I just don't get it.

11. What the hell is wrong with some liberal spin?
No one in the media says that FOX has gone too far. No one in the media calls Rush Limbaugh out on the carpet. No one tells Sean Hannity that he is repugnant and a lair. I say, leave it alone.

The good news is, Keith is kicking ass in the ratings.

16. This is the meme that is developing as we speak.
That MSNBC is 'liberal'.

First of all, they have two hours of original liberal programming, Olbermann and Maddow. Matthews is a centrist, not a liberal. Gregory is right, but not far right. Of course, when you suck at the teat of Roger Ailes, everyone to the left of Himmler is a far left liberal.

Second of all, they have prime spots for conservatives, specifically Joe Scarborough. His show is THREE hours long, that's more pure conservative programming than liberal. The rest of the day is filled with a combination.

Now compare that to FAUX, which has liberals that are just punching bags for the conservative hosts. For God's sake, O'Reilly is still claiming he's an Independent!

Compare that to CNN, which has Lou Dobbs (who also claims he's an Independent) and the rest are, at best, center to center right, with the exception of Anderson Cooper, who's as close to a liberal they have.

As for Linda Bloodworth-Thompson, looking at her resume, there isn't a single show she did I find remotely funny, except maybe one of the five episodes of MASH. 'Designing Women' sucked. 'Evening Shade' was worse. She was part of the reason TV was (and is) the banal wasteland it was. She's also a LONG time supporter of the Clintons, going back to Arkansas. Such transparent sour grapes, get the fuck over it. Obama wasn't the first choice for a lot of Democrats, you don't see us whining endlessly.

Finally, finding out the unfiltered truth about Sarah Palin is not attacking, to think she needs to be treated with kid gloves is highly sexist. You think FAUX is going tell you the truth?

17. Too bad about Patricia Heaton. I actually liked her as an actress.
Edited on Wed Oct-29-08 12:44 AM by SurferBoy
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patricia_Heaton

Heaton is a consistent life ethicist and is supportive of pro-life groups and causes, opposing abortion, euthanasia, and the death penalty.<1> Heaton's advocacy became particularly visible during the debate regarding Terri Schiavo.<5> In addition, Heaton is Honorary Chair of Feminists for Life, a non-partisan organization which opposes abortion and embryonic stem cell research and supports other pro-life causes on the basis of feminism.<1>

In October 2006, Heaton appeared in a commercial opposing a Missouri state constitutional amendment concerning embryonic stem cell research, which subsequently passed. The ad was a response to the election of Democratic Senate hopeful Claire McCaskill and ran at about the same time as Michael J. Fox's famous ad supporting the amendment.<1> Appearing with Heaton were actor Jim Caviezel, pitcher Jeff Suppan of the St. Louis Cardinals (now of the Milwaukee Brewers), Mike Sweeney of the Kansas City Royals and Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner, formerly of the St. Louis Rams.

Heaton supports John McCain for President in 2008.

So, she's anti-abortion, against assisted-suicide/euthanasia, and against embyronic stem cell research.
