PLEASE put some clothes on Rachel!
I was watching the Rachel Maddow show last night (Monday, October 27th). Are they going for the cleavage look for Rachel?! Call me old fashioned, but I'm a firm believer in modesty, especially for female news anchors on TV. Rachel's cami's are getting lower and lower -- anyone else notice this? Why are they doing this? I for one don't like it - it looks cheap and immodest to me. Please, Rachel, insist on more modest cami's -- it's much more becoming for you!!

Edit: I just looked her outfit in post #85, and I see nothing inappropriate about it at all.

156. Ever consider a bit of DIGNITY?????
Guys also like continual sex... must we lay down all the time, any time, any where for any one, because it's "human nature"? What a crock.

You've put waaaay too much emphasis on "human nature". I know of NO Indian tribe that would condone this kind of "thought".

There are MANY cultures which are very sexually liberated, which DON"T do this to women.

"nothing wrong with it, nothing "offensive"."

No, because you see women as there for your USE.

If you were to consider human DIGNITY, then you'd see plenty wrong with it.

The RW confuses sex with evil.

So many "progressives" confuse sex with the lack of respect.

72. My argument is that if the OP has a problem with what rachael wears
then she needs to keep it to herself. I also don't think that the OP needs you to fight her battles. Apparently you did not comprehend what I said in my other post to her. That's right, I suggested that she reflect on how she feels about the female body. I'm sorry if women like you and her feel that your bodies are nasty and vulgar and that you have a need to project your own feelings of inadequacy upon her. There is nothing wrong with what Rachael wore on her television show and people like you coming here to bitch about it says much more about you that it does Rachael.

I also noticed the low cut shirt. She still is a nice looking woman, and if she likes it i'm ok with it. For me it's more her personality than looks anyway. Imo her physical looks are just average, but couple that with her attitude, brains, and whit and she sparkles.

31. I didn't notice an inch of clevage there, so I'm not seeing a problem
the look elongates her neck and the strong vertical make her look more slender. It's flattering. I love V-neck styles for this reason. But then, I DO show a lot of cleavage generally. In Florida it's tough to get away from showing skin. From my perspective; if Rachael were any more covered up she'd look Amish!

38. I don't mind seeing cleavage at all, in most venues, but an
anchor woman needs to be more modest (IMO) so that you can focus on what they're saying and not on how they look. If Rachel just had a few more inches, she would still have a long neck-line, but have a more respectable look.

bad look for her. Poorly cut suit coat for her figure, and far too much neck and chest showing proportionate to her head and button placement on the jacket.

She has a long neck already, so that deep v just makes her look longer. A better jacket would be better, but if they use that one again, she needs a better cami or blouse under it, maybe with a necklace to break up the line.

76. She is SOOOOO not wearing what she normally would
First, she doesn't wear make-up in daily life, second look at this picture:

That's how Rachel normally dresses. MSNBC is de-dykifying her. Here's a photo when she was just a guest from time to time:

So it's safe to say Rachel does not get a real say in what she wears.

102. I recall her saying that she's had to fight to keep her butch look on tv
The makeup people are always trying to slather more on her and she repeatedly tells them to make her up exactly how they would make up men (a lot of people don't realize men wear makeup for TV too, for the cameras--especially in this era of HDTV).

It makes me sad because I love butch women, but that's just the starry eyed femme in me talking, lol. :D

I see more every time I take the train. 90% of them get off or on at the Pentagon.

Hell, I even got me a secondhand suit, and I'll be cutting my hair off after Inauguration day (I'm currently farming it for a chemo patient.) Young folks of both sexes dig the style enough to tell me about it.

Do you have a lot of Rachel wannabes in NYC?

The nation's first out Rhodes Scholar finds a voice on radio

So, how does a self-described butch dyke from California -- out and proud since her early days as a student and HIV/AIDS activist at Stanford University -- get to be one of the newest left-wing media darlings? Certainly not by design.

"I 100 percent believe that the reason that I have not gone further in television is not only because I am gay, but because of what I look like. I am not a Barbie girl with Barbie doll-like looks. Because in television, what you look like is a huge deal," she said, adding that the only anti-gay sentiments she has received in her radio career is from "cranky old homophobes who listen to the show and say, 'That Maddow, all she talks about is the gays.'"

43. MSNBC dresses her
It's not her style, it's more what's considered the norm in television...

From one interview:

“I feel like in terms of what I look like, I’m working in a very visual medium for the first time in my life, and I’m just sort of trying to get by in terms of the basic, the minimum that I need to do visually in order to be allowed to be on television,” she says. “And so I put on the suit, so that I can go on TV. I let the makeup ladies put makeup on me, which they do to their own satisfaction. I don’t pay much attention to it.”

And from a New York Times Magazine piece:

"Clothing item a talk-show host needs: For me, it is sneakers, which I can wear 80 percent of the time, secretly behind the desk. That reminds me who I am, even though I am dressed up like an assistant principal in order to meet the minimum dress code for being on television."

So direct gripes, etc. to the makeup and clothing pros at the network...

70. What is nice about Rachel's decolletage
is that it's natural, not pushed up into two weird bumps as is the prevailing fashion that makes supposedly serious, professional women look like tarts. Rachel doesn't look tarty. She looks lithe and lean and in control of her body.

Even though MSNBC "dresses" her and she has complained about the dowdy jackets she's required to wear, I doubt she is forced to wear lowcut tops. I'm sure if she didn't like it she would do what women throughout time have done and pinned the shoulder seams to bring the neckline up higher.

What I find distracting is the amount of makeup they pile on her naturally beautiful face. But after a few minutes I am so wrapped up in what she's saying that I don't notice how she looks.

73. Has been the norm now, for all the shows
It used to be that women who read the news would wear a suit jacket - just like their men co-readers. But for the past few years they show cleavage and thighs. Samantha Bee had a good skit about it on the Daily Show once.

On the Morning shows they don't bother with a jacket, any of them. On CBS, especially, cleavage is a must.

Colber, as a matter of fact, poked fun at Peggy Noonan last night, showing a photo of her with a cleavage with a comment "nice rack.."

I suspect that (to the extent that she has ANY control) her primary concern is to go with "not distracting". She has far too much to say to want what she wears to cause any distracting visual noise.

85. I didn't actually notice anything.
Here she is from last night:

I don't really see anything scandalous here- maybe there were some other shots later on. Her makeup, on the other hand, is all over the place. She doesn't need much, looks best with very little, so stop making her look so unnatural by doing a Tammy Faye on her.

The fact is that for certain professions a certain look is needed. You can carve out some individual space, but wander too far and you're doing a disservice to your career by getting people to talk about your appearance rather than your message. People who are goth and feel it truly reflects them, for example, can't walk into a newsroom in their authentic garb and expect not to have clashes.

I'd like to think we're talking about it because 90% of us already agree on her greatness and have nothing else to comment on.

By the by, she's got a NEW website. It's great. You can watch the entire show, or download it in audio or video format. What I really like about it, it's red, white and blue, but hip like a liberal would do it.

but she is beautiful and could look *A LOT* better. The wardrobe peeps at MSNBC are not doing her justice. The cami was low, not in a cleavage-showing way, but with the high-waisted pants and a jacket that is cut to flare out at the waist, it was not a look that would be flattering on anyone.

115. The network doesn't think she's 'sexy' enough.
They are trying to widen the demographic. Young men are the most difficult to get to watch television, so, most ads, etc. are designed to appeal to them. Hence, Rachel's more traditional, 'sexy' look.

139. To YOU maybe
she looks like "barbie Maddow"... to me, I refuse to judge someone based on appearance.

If she is somehow being forced to wear what some call revealing clothing ( which is laughable really ) I would think she is progressive enough to complain to someone in her organization. Plus, it appears that we have no proof of such assertion and we seem to have some clothing puritans here on DU.

Honestly, I feel that this is a very sad case of another woman being judged and demonized by what she wears. How sad.

123. What's really sad is reading the rest of the comments here, and seeing
just how juvenile so many "progressives" are.

No wonder so many women are fed up with the low awareness.

Really disgusting.

Feminists have been saying that for ..... what, over 40 years now?

What does it take to get through to people?

The fact that you are "outraged" over how she is being dressed tells me you are really just upset with Rachel for selling out.

I watched the same show you did and believe me I didn't see what you were seeing. Am a woman 60 yrs old. Am a very modest person. If you want to see cleavage just watch the food channel. Gada lets it all hang out. I stopped watching it. I find that to distracting. Of course guys wouldn't.

If you are more worried about what she wears than what she says, then your head's in the wrong place. She is very smart, and speaks well. That's why I watch.

140. Wow, look at all the responses.
This reminds me of the great bikini war of the summer Olympics in beach volleyball:

"They're practical items for beachware!"

"They're purposely demanding women dress skimpily!"

No wonder some women get neurotic about their bodies and what to wear. So much hyper-analyzation, it's a no-win situation. It's not like she whipped 'em out and started twirling tassels.

149. Rachel's primary draw is her immense brain.. M$NBC could dress her up in fancy hats.
"This one shows just a hint of cerebellum. What do you think?"
"No, it's too demure. Today we want something more direct, vibrant, more of a frontal lobe thing."

154. Brains vs. Tits
See, this is what happens when a woman has brains. Lower her neckline so all the men can think of is her cleavage. That way she's not so threatening.

I'm waiting for Olberhman in a tank top. Or Jon Stewart, yeah, that might be good. Brian Williams? Maybe. Jeez boys, take it off.

169. I've thought the same thing.
I LOVE Rachel and think she's naturally beautiful. I'm not much for makeup myself unless I have to. LOL

I'm not trying to be sexist either, but it's the jacket with the open neck that doesn't look good. She would look great in a nice collared shirt under her jacket. Her neck looks too thick without it. Sorry, but I'd comment on a man if he looked bad when I know he could look better!

178. two things -- first unles you have it from rachels mouth that
she is being 'tarted up' -- then you are virtually spreading a lie -- a fabrication -- some weird version of your fantasy.
that you call that being tarted up is incredibly telling.

second -- demonstrating that you think rachel is being tarted up by those jackets and camis -- you have the worst possible taste.
you should really refrain taking that out for a walk on the internet and showing everyone.

Edited on Thu Oct-30-08 01:29 PM by xchrom
rachel and what she wears when not at work are two extraordinarily different worlds.
more you have no idea from the things she said what she likes to wear in every circumstance.

it was freudian -- to say the least -- to speculate in the OP about someone else 'tarting' her up.
it was a fucked up personal projection.
