Pittsburgh law enforcement sources tell TMZ they have serious questions about the authenticity of the alleged victim who says she had her face cut by a politically-motivated attacker.

We're told there are several things about the alleged attack that don't add up. A Pittsburgh PD official says they are conducting a "thorough investigation" and have not determined if the alleged attack is real or a hoax. But we're told there is definitely a level of skepticism.

"I lived in Bloomfield for about four years - right on S. Matilda St., between Liberty Ave. and the busway. I can tell you it is a VERY safe neighborhood - some older folks still leave their doors unlocked at night. Liberty Ave. has a lot of foot traffic at night because of all the bars and restaurants, not to mention a MAJOR police presence. Also, this incident occurred only three blocks from West Penn Hospital. I know she wasn't familiar with the area, but the idea of her not getting medical attention is absolutely ludicrous. No, this whole thing is fishy as hell.

I have lived within two blocks of this "crime scene" and have walked past this ATM at all hours of the night -- 9 PM, 10 PM, 2 AM, 4 AM.

At 9 PM that street is full of pedestrians, but I guess that it is conceivably possible to be quickly mugged there.

I have a big Labrador retriever that loves to fetch. One day, I was playing with him and I reached down to get the ball and I got full on nailed by that boney thing on top of his head right in the eye-bone over my right eye. I ran in the house because I thought uh-oh, this is gonna be bad, and it was just a little red. I went to bed and THE NEXT MORNING I woke up with a lovely purple shiner that lasted full on a couple of weeks. The moral of this story is..

1) surveillance video should corroborate the time of the withdrawal and show her without the facial wounds sustained in the subsequent attack.

2) no witnesses? At 9:00 on Liberty Ave?

3) there's been no mention of who the friend is, or where that friend lived. Must have been fairly close by, as it didn't take long to go to the friend's house, then return to the scene of the crime. Sounds like they felt like they had to go find where it happened before calling the police. Given that the victim was from out of town and sounds like she didn't know her way around very well, I wonder why the friend didn't accompany her in the first place?
