Walter Schneller: The History Teacher Who Had Future Vision
History teacher had future vision

MCNBC - Countdown
Keith Olberman

Countdown’s Keith Olbermann reflects on his late history teacher Walter Schneller of Hackley School in Tarrytown, New York. In the 1990s, Schneller was in charge of the school’s guest speakers for Black History Month and found a third year law student from Harvard by the name of Barack Obama to speak at a school assembly.

    In the spring of 1991, the student newspaper "The Hackley Review," Elisha Waugota said of Barack Obama's speech:

    "...throughout his speech... he emphasized that change is possible...."

    "...the core of his ideas was that, as the nation comes out of the conservative, money-hungry, and cynical atmosphere of the eighties, it needs the idealism of a socially conscious generation coupled with the actions to fulfill idealistic goals..."

    "...perhaps because the times are confusing and the future is unforeseeable, the students of the upper school listened closely to Barack Obama."

- Unlike John McCain, you can see that the Barack Obama of seventeen years ago, even as such a young man, he has remained true to his political beliefs and ideals. This is the consistency, stability, purpose and the national focus about "who we are", that we have sorely lacked.

And are in dire need of....

11. Nice post
I watched this live and was smiling about Walter Schneller's prescience. I read a while back that one of his Harvard Law Professors from Scotland had told his wife 20 years ago that he thought Obama would be the first black President.

Here's that link.

<snip>
In an interview with the Sunday Herald, the Edinburgh-based professor emeritus said he spotted Obama's potential in class and told his wife his student was going to be the US's first black president. He also said his young charge had a "commanding presence" and did not like to be interrupted when in full flow.

"What I remember about him was that he was a calm person in a class that was not altogether characterised by people being calm."

On Obama's qualities, he recalls: "He came across as a person of strong character, that is what I noticed. I began to conclude that he was a person of not just strong character, but as a person of real honest-to-God integrity. It was certainly what attracted me to him, that he was very straightforward."
