KKK in Oklahoma stepping up their anti-Obama message

EDMOND — Signs are emerging that groups actively alarmed about Barack Obama’s prospects for becoming the first African-American president are aggressively pressing their case against the Democratic candidate.

An appalling example is a white supremacist organization called the Knights Party of the Ku Klux Klan. It has been piggybacking the group’s anti-Obama propaganda on the mainstream Ada Evening News and distributing it to homes there.

This unauthorized use of the newspaper has been going on under the cover of dark in Ada for two weeks, said publisher Loné Beasley. Subscribers have complained that old editions of the paper wrapped with the Klan material land on their doorsteps and they don’t like it.

“We have nothing to do with this,” Beasley said. “But there’s probably some confusion out there. We’ve asked our customers to bring any copies they get with this Klan stuff to our attention.”

The Ada Evening News is delivered daily to two-thirds of the homes in Ada, a mostly white community of 16,500 in the rolling hills of southeastern Oklahoma. The Klan is apparently getting old copies of the Evening News from local recycling centers, then redistributing them with the anti-Obama message.

I live in Oklahoma. I would love for Oklahoma to go blue as we actually have a democratic governor, but I'm under no delusion that Obama is going to win my state. The Klan is wasting their time, energy, and money for nothing and in doing so, making themselves look bad.

Las candidate to visit Ada itself was Jimmy Carter. As a little boy, I got to see him. It was cool.

12. I contacted some friends in Ada about this ...

Ada is where I lived most of my life. It's just odd to me how such a tiny, insignificant town keeps turning up in news that goes international. (I saw the story about this in a link yesterday from the South Africa Times, of all places.) It's apparently been going on for awhile now, and the people I know in Ada are pretty well disgusted and fired up about the whole thing. It's sorta backfiring.

Ada has a university and thus is a bit more liberal than a lot of areas. It's also at the edge of the more traditionally Democratic portion of the state.

The official "Klan," inasmuch as it actually exists anymore, is probably seeking publicity and some kind of relevance. Ada hasn't even been a hotbed of Klan activity for a very long time, and most of the people who claimed a Klan identification when I lived there (up until about 8 years ago) were fringe individuals wanting to find some form of legitimacy. One day they were Klan. The next they were skinheads, then Satanists. They were just racist shitheads really.

Ada — Unauthorized use of Ada Evening News continued this weekend as many residents in Ada, Allen and surrounding areas received “newsletters” from the Ku Klux Klan.

During the early hours Saturday and Sunday morning, Ada area lawns were snowed with rolled newspapers that were wrapped in “a weekly newsletter” from the Klan.

When residents retrieved their newspapers, they were shocked to find the message.

“We were stunned and disgusted,” one reader said. “I just can’t believe it goes on.”

“It’s unfortunate they are using the newspaper as a vehicle for their message,” another reader said.
