"Caribou Barbie" could have been a variation on that or it could have been of a completely separate simultaneous origin.

where, for example, sign language was invented in a bunch of different cultures and independently?

I think we have a fantastic marketing opportunity here. Tundra Barbie, Caribou Barbie, Midge to Nowhere.

34. Collective Subconscious by Jung. That's the term.
Edited on Sun Oct-19-08 12:53 PM by progressivebydesign
collective subconscious is also known as "a reservoir of the experiences of our species." from WIkipedia.

I remember this from my screenwriting classes when he talked of people coming up with the same script ideas around the same time. Because we all have similar experiences, and are exposed to similar media (and toys), then our ideas may be triggered by the same things at the same times, and we're drawing on wells of similar experience.

But the path that your post took probably had the most effect.

Talk radio people are vastly influential in popularizing these little buzzwords and catchphrases.

Look at Randi Rhode's "privatize the profits and socialize the losses". It's used widely now because she repeats it so often (and bitches that she never gets credit for it).

25. I coined it here for the first time, a day or two after she was chosen, here on DU.
Edited on Sun Oct-19-08 12:32 PM by progressivebydesign
But I have no idea if anyone else came up with it before I did. People were calling her Moosebuger Barbie, and I had remembered my Malibu Barbie, so the Caribou thing just fit. I was calling her "Caribou Barbie! Comes complete with her OWN scandal!"

So... I'm not sure who predates whom on it, but I was probably the first here on DU. (I don't listen to Stephanie Miller because of her time slot.)

Actually I think sfexpat2000 and I seemed to have coined it simultaneously around the same day... I think they call that collective unconscious.

49. It was our own sfexpat2000 who first thought of it, within hours of Palin's selection...
Many of us were busy on Google all night that evening, searching for dead caribou shots and slaughtered wolves and other dead animal pics, with Palin alongside, the blood on her hands.

Seemslikeadream made a post showing one that she'd found, displaying the elder Palin's pelt-covered living room, and practically without hesitation, Beth replied with "Caribou Barbie and Her Dream House Full of Dead Animals".

Sfexpat2000 should get the credit for originating the term...I was here and watched it happen, live on DU, in the wee hours of the morning right after McCain named Palin as his choice!

56. A few of us were actually already familiar with her policies against Wildlife Protection...
and knew that she was a fraud...I have friends who are real hunters and fishermen who already long despised her and her ilk for the advocacy of mechanized hunting techniques...her touting of "snow machine" hunting trips; her fight to legalize helicopter shooting of wolves, under the guise of "protecting herds" for better hunting; also, her attempts (some successful and some failed) to destroy the salmon spawning grounds and further reduce populations which effectively, ends salmon fishing for all who subsist on them; her dastardly campaign to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to both drilling and mining; and her frantic legal fight to block the protection of polar bears, combined with her denials that climate-change is a threat to them, which, in the long run, will eventually permanently end a way of life for some First Alaskans.

I don't know any hunter or fisherman (among folks I know who actually live up in Alaska and also those who love and respect and enjoy its wilderness for just that...the wildness of it), that have ever supported or agreed with Palin's warped policy of backing the oil and mining industries and "sport" hunting and she has never been "popular" with any of them. Even some tribal people who at first believed her to be on their side have since learned that she only represents the decimation of their very culture.

Hunting and fishing is the way of life for much of the Pacific Northwest and the Far North. And that is where she has been, by far, the most deadly.

58. I doubt that once she's sent home, we'll have heard the last of her...
she will still have big-bucks corporate-industry backing her, hell, even Obama thinks offshore drilling might be cool, so protecting what little pristine environment we have left is something that should and must be pounded home as a priority.

I have a feeling that she's to become the poster girl for using (up) our natural resources and this new push to break free from foreign energy, if it doesn't focus specifically on alternative sources, rather than natural gas and American oil and shale reserves and "clean" coal and the like, could become disastrous.

After much gabbing with those who are familiar with her Alaskan tactics, I'm beginning to believe that she's more of a threat to the Environment than she is even to Women's Rights. She's power-crazed, with money on her side. Those types don't go away quietly.

Sorry that I missed hearing about that one...the foreign secret socialist O flag of terrorists everywhere! This will strike some hard-ass funnybones back home, for sure, but how damn ignorant can someone get (or vicious, for that matter)? Guess schools don't drill state facts like they used to.

I sure hope the idiocy of it helps a bit to sway Ohio away from the fanatical hysteria and put them back over to the good side.
