4. I think my favorite would get more votes if it had a better title.

I like the photo with the title of: The Fount of Ideology: Take the Next Step. The communist hammer and sickle on the mile marker that reassembles a tombstone with the trashed Coca-Cola box in front says sooo much.

To me it says that Communism and corporations go hand in hand. The title should be more like:

"Corporate-Communism, it's the real thing".

Anyway it's a great Photo.

I can't decide between "rebuild peace" and "out of iraq,"

but they are all wonderful.

The title of the first pic wins the title award.

8. I am SICK SICK SICK of hate

so I will not vote for Conscience. I believe Ideology was taken either here in Nepal or in India. The writing on the building behind is Devnagari and a 'maoist' insurgency joined the political process here and actually won in a general election last spring. The hammer and sickle is an all too familiar site here. The Nepali 'maoist' win has emboldened India's "maoists.'

To me, nothing matters more than PEACE. And I love the holder of the sign. The Spanish on his shirt, the look on his face, how 'radical' he looks to those around him. PEACE always gets my vote.

14. It was a difficult decision for me.

It finally came down to "Toward a more humane America" or "For the Children".

"For the Children" got my heart in the end. They are all great.

15. I'm a bit anal when it comes to the THEME of such contests.

While the technical excellence (composition, color balance, depth of field, etc.) is probably the largest part of my assessment, I can't help but weigh the THEMATIC ephemerals heavily. Since the theme is "Need for Change" and not "beginnings of change" or "signs of change" or just "change," I'm obliged to narrow my choices down to 2 or 3 ... and that tattered flag with the (apparently) abandoned factory in the background seems so dead-on that it's earned my vote. I see the flag not as some jingoistic autocratic emblem but as a symbol of a nation (of People!) with hopes and aspirations to form a "more perfect union" ... and that's the whole point of our 'need' for change. It's the damage done to our "hopes and aspirations" ... the surrender of that vision for a "more perfect union" ... and respect for the working (enslaved or sharecropper) class.

Thus, I find the "Promise of Renewal" to be most thematically apt ... emblematic in both composition and title.

I don't usually think one pic is way better than others, so it's usually all down to personal preference. I vote for the one I like, but I can see how others vote for their favourites. But this is different...this is a no brainer. The picture is absolutely breathtaking.

It needs more votes.

It makes its point without announcing that it's making its point.

It fantastically captures how outrage about the war in the US has morphed into a weary despair. Does anyone have a link to the photographer's website?

It's shameful that protesters are an isolated bunch. Everyone should take to the streets whenever they have free time; if more people protested the abominable war, their combined voices would be louder and more likely to be listened to by those in power.

That does take some kind of courage. We have quite a few Republicans for Obama right here in El Paso County, Colorado, otherwise known as Dobson's fundyland. I think Ted Haggard's little problem grabbed the attention of quite a few people. And the actually sane and truly Christian side of the Evangelicals have stepped up their message of Christian love and charity.
