Thanks Bachmann

On October 17, 2008, Bachmann, during an interview on MSNBC's Hardball with Chris Matthews, called for the media to investigate both houses of Congress to identify "liberal, leftist, possibly anti-American" members.

9. You guys do realize he's anti-abortion & anti-gay marriage, right?
As a woman whose best friend and sister are lesbians, this matters to me.

11. I don't know what ActBlue did or didn't do, but here's one of several articles
Democrats, Stung in 2004, Tap Anti-Abortion, Pro-Gun Candidates

By Heidi Przybyla

``There are some in the national Democratic leadership who think perhaps choice has become too much of a litmus test in the party, and it hurts them,'' Duffy said.

Other Democratic recruits for Congress who sound more like traditional Republicans on social issues include former Minnesota Transportation Commissioner Elwyn Tinklenberg, who is anti-abortion, and former college and professional football player Heath Shuler, an avid hunter from North Carolina who opposes abortion and gun controls.

I originally read at Wiki that he's anti-abortion and anti-gay marriage.

I'm desperately sorry I donated $10 to the guy. I'm usually more cautious and check BEFOREhand.

19. Relax. He is a conservative Dem but he is not anti-choice.
Like many conservative Dems, especially in troglodyte districts, he prefers to emphasize his pro-life principles. It's entirely possible to be personally opposed to abortion, but to support women having the right to decide for themselves.

Like many conservative Dems, he's walking the "I don't think Churches should be forced to perform gay marriages if it's against their beliefs, plus I personally believe marriage is between one man and one woman" line, but he is in favor of civil rights and legal parity for gays.

The district he is running in is paleolithic. It rivals the Range for woolhats and blockheads. But it also has many old-style centrists who once considered themselves Dems, jumped on the Reagan bandwagon and drank the kool-aid, and are starting to wake up with the hangover.

Yes, there is a high religious nutjob quotient (I have relations in Oak Park Heights who are squarely in the fundie nutjob demographic,) but most of the conservative-to-middle-of-the-road folks there see themselves as old-fashioned Minnesota Nice types and are liable to be turned off by Bachman's over-the-top kookiness. Offer them a not-too-scary-looking alternative and they might decide to finally ditch her.

El is a good candidate for the district even if he's right of most DUers. He wouldn't be my pick, but then, my pick could never win the district.

soothingly,
Bright

Apparently, he considers himself "pro-life" but would not support any restrictions on abortion:

Minnesota: Former Transportation Commissioner Elwyn Tinklenberg on Saturday won the Democratic nomination for the U.S. House seat representing the state's sixth district, the AP/Rochester Post-Bulletin reports. Tinklenberg said he is "pro-life" but told the state Democratic convention that he would not support any restrictions on abortion. Tinklenberg defeated Bob Olson -- a St. Cloud, Minn.-based tax attorney -- who tried to appeal to abortion-rights supporters, according to the AP/Post-Bulletin. Tinklenberg will face Rep. Michele Bachmann (R) in the November election (Lohn, AP/Rochester Post-Bulletin, 4/26).

Not finding anything on oppostion to on gay marriage....

"It's such a different time than two years ago,'' said Tinklenberg. "Social issues — abortion, guns, gay marriage — that had such an important role in the last election aren't front and center now. Now, it's economic issues. They've become very personal. Even people who have good jobs are nervous. We are living the Bush-Bachmann agenda.''

Googling further.... I'll let you know if I find something more concrete.

18. The gay marriage thing came from Wiki
...so I'm not sure of the source. I dug further before coming back here a bit upset.

After reading him being described as a "family values" socially conservative Dem in a few articles, I'd be surprised if he wasn't opposed to gay marriage.

20. I do agree that this is troubling. But at least as donors we have some POWER.
I think the best thing to do is call or write his campaign headquarters tomorrow and mention that, as some of the thousands of PROGRESSIVE people who donated to his campaign overnight, we expect him to protect the civil rights of ALL Americans and will not tolerate writing discrimination into the Constitution.
