"The nation needs Barack Obama" - Salt Lake Tribune

A simple choice: The nation needs Barack Obama in the White House

Tribune Editorial

Article Last Updated: 10/17/2008 08:06:04 PM MDT

The next U.S. president will lead a nation that remains embroiled in two wars and is beset by an economic meltdown more severe than any since the Great Depression.

By necessity, the country's next commander in chief must also be its mender in chief, capable of inspiring his angry and divided constituents to join together in a recovery project to restore the peace, prosperity, and self-confidence we once knew.

We fear that a lesser effort may be insufficient to reverse America's slide toward economic, political and societal chaos. The times require dramatic and comprehensive change.

7. Congratulations!
Someone in the LBN thread posted that SLT was the "secular" paper. That The Deseret(?) is the "unofficial" church paper. So, this is great! However, if we see it in The Deseret I'll know hell is frozen.

:D

15. Yes, The Deseret News is the Church-owned paper, and the SL Trib is the "normal" one.
But just the fact that a Utah paper endorsed a Democrat here, in the reddest of red states, is really something to celebrate. (And I just *had* to go post this in GDP - I hope you don't mind. It is *such* great news!) GOBAMA!

9. Kickin' it back up.
I think those of us from the western part of the US "get" this a tad more than the rest of the country.

I'll try to keep this up top for those of us "out west."

"absolutely historical" That's what I was thinking.

Liberal, liberal or liberal compared to the Deseret News and the church liberal?

I should write a book.

30. Same here.
And it could be skewing my view in the opposite direction from yours :-), because the extreme right-wing views that surround me made the old SLTrib seem like breath of fresh air.

Where in Utah are you, if you don't mind me asking? I'm always pleased to meet fellow Utahns here. I'm in Emery County, btw.

I know what you mean about those inversions. I lived in Salt Lake one year and the winter was tough.
I hope you're enjoying Summit County. It's a beautiful area.

I intend to move back to Salk Lake, eventually. (It's hard to save enough moeny to move,) I loved it there, despite the winter. ( I lived in Fairbanks, Alaska one winter, so anything else seems mild by comparison.)

17. Liberal compared to the Deseret News.
Although we have had some fairly "liberal, liberal" leaders recently. Rocky Anderson (SLC's former Mayor) held anti-Bush and anti-war rallies!

23. Nowadays, it's only liberal compared to the Deseret News.
It used to be just plain liberal, in my opinion, and I'm further left than liberal. Of course, it could be that it seemed more liberal than it really was because of the stark comparison to the Des News.

28. That's pretty much what I think, too.
The most "liberal, liberal" paper we have now is the "Salt Lake City Weekly" which isn't really a newspaper per se, but it is definitely to the far left.

10. Sounds like the Trib is regaining some of its integrity.
Edited on Fri Oct-17-08 11:36 PM by Herdin_Cats
It was always Utah's liberal newspaper, with wider circulation than the more conservative Deseret News, because it was also the far superior paper.

In 2004, the editorial pages of the Tribune were full of anti-Bush, anti-Republican sentiment. Then, much to the dismay of its readers, it suddenly came out with endorsements of Bush and the Republican candidate for governor, John Huntsman. It was obvious that they had been forced to make the endorsements by the owners (MediaNews Group), because they were the most left-handed endorsements I've ever read. The editorial writers seemed to be trying to both denounce and endorse Bush at the same time. Even the editorial cartoon was a double entendre, by the wonderful, liberal Salt Lake Trib cartoonist, Pat Bagley, whose work I've seen posted on DU numerous times. Here it is:

People (including me) were up in arms over the Trib's endorsements. Many people felt so betrayed that they cancelled their subscriptions. In my opinion, the SLTrib has gone steeply down hill since then, as if they've simply given up. Their daily paper is as thin these days as the Deseret News.

Perhaps this endorsement of Obama signals a return to their former independence, integrity and honest journalism.

43. Perhaps. Utah is predominantly Morman, however
there are non-Mormons who live and work there. Perhaps this is for them. Or perhaps the paper made an honest assessment and couldn't deny this conclusion. Of course, not all Mormons are bots and this could be for them, as well. :D

Perhaps, as Herdin Cats said up thread, maybe they've recovered some of their integrity.

At the bottom of the article I linked, there's a break down of mccain's tax plan versus Obama's. I had to squint to see it; but the breakdown is there. Obama's is, of course, better for us 98%ers. Some things, if we're honest, can't be denied. Maybe they chose honest.

Hey, it could happen. :D
