My 7 yr old..."But I wanted to be the first Black President!"
I was talking to my son the other day about how wonderful it was that we were about to watch the 1st Black President get elected. He was happy at first but then said, "Oh but I wanted to be the 1st Black President" He was so sincere about it too. It was little kid cute. :) I told him that hopefully he can be the 2nd.

After I thought about it a while, I really don't want him to be the 2nd. That's about 40 years from now and way too long. Hopefully this election will be the one that changes things for ALL of us.

Do you think we will see the floodgates open after President Obama? Women, Other minorities, etc.
If we got to the point where we could elect a female, minority, lesbian to the office of President...I think we would finally achieve world peace

2. Was just gonna say, why only the 2nd, by then?
But yes -- women, non-Christians, etc., etc., -- let American diversity finally roll into the Oval office!

6. I agree but let's not make that our main criteria
That would be as stupid as voting for someone "you'd like to have a beer with" wouldn't it? I always want the smartest, most inspiring MFer in the room.

10. It'd be nice to see it as a non-criteria, in other words, having zero effect on anyone's "chances...

11. I actually think the religion barrier might be harder to break than racial ones in a way
There's still too many sunken browed yahoos that think we're a "Christian Nation" and if you don't love Jebus then you just aint an American. I'm not an athiest myself but I think I'd rather have one as a President above anyone else.

20. This is true
The fact is that if Obama WAS a Muslim, he wouldn't have had a chance. I find that very sad.

35. I don't know about that
Most of the racism thrown at Obama isn't whether or not he is black, it's he is either arab or muslim. Considering that if he is elected, in alot of people's minds he'll be the first arab or muslim President we ever had.

Not only the first Black person, but one of the persons on the very first expedition!

And at least one woman on that expedition.

A Latino.

Hell, maybe even a straight white guy on that expedition to Mars!

:) :)

17. I Had Hoped In the 70's that we'd go to Mars by now.
But, we may not say that happen for at least another 20 years and possibly 40 or more years.

I wish that wasn't so.

34. Can I be the straight white guy?
There's two things I want to do before dying. Go down in a shark cage with Great Whites around (no cage for other sharks...I'm too chewy anyways), and go to Mars. :)

12. That is really cute
and I am constantly amazed at how smart kids are now. He really must have been thinking about becoming the first Black President as a goal! Can't say that my friends or I were thinking in such large terms at age 7. We were pretty much limited to the outcome of the neighborhood kickball game.
Pretty impressive son you have there!

18. Your son will grow up to be a fine young man
He's got great ambitions.

Don't forget that Obama is not becoming president merely because he's a black man, but because he's the most qualified for the job--intelligent, articulate, and with the right mixture of empathy and assertiveness. It sounds like your son is going to be a kindred spirit, and I think Obama would be proud to have him follow in his footsteps. :)

29. Hahaha. How precious.
And he's only 7. There must be some way to assuage his loss. There must be plenty of room for him in all of the other areas in our government.

You know, it's not as important what is on the outside of a person as what's on the inside. He may still be president. But instead of being the first black president, perhaps he'll be the best we've ever known.

He's already on his way.

33. Well, Obama is biracial, so your son just may have a chance at that...
Besides, we can have a first female pres, a first Latino pres, a first president of Asian descent, a first atheist/agnostic president--hell, any non-Christian president in the intervening 40 years. And actually, your son can run in 32 years; he only need be at least 35 years old.

The day when the there can be two black men on the ticket, or two women on the ticket, or whatever - and no one will think twice about it. No one will fret over whether it's 'strategic'.

I really hope to live to see that day.
