| I don't think Gay Marriage is debatable.... |
|
I think it is offensive to even debate this nonissue. There is nothing in the Constitution that says anything about group A and Group B being treated differently or that it is OK to do so.
There is nothing unconstitutional about Gay Marriage or immoral about it, allowing a group of religious thugs to dictate a civil/Human right is deplorable to say the least. Listening to people who hide behind their 'religion' in order to get away bigotry and to suppress other people is also, deplorable.
I find that this issue being debated very insulting. "Right to Privacy"...period.

| 1. You're right. What's going on now is unconstitutional in fact. |
|
You've got this religious idea about marriage being between a man and woman backed up by the government, which is directly against the first Amendment.
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.
So the bottom is that ANY CHURCH which says gay marriage is okay MUST be respected by the constitution, period.

| 4. Its unconstitutional for the government to *define* marriage at all. IMHO |

Its unconstitutional for them to define it as between a man and woman or a man and a man because any of these statements makes them essentially establishing a state religion...They need to define the legal parts of civil unions for everybody and let the people sort out what "marriage" means to them in their own churches and homes.

| 6. And since there is NO statement regarding marriage.. |
|
Edited on Sat Oct-04-08 01:58 AM by and-justice-for-all
or a definition in the Constitution in regards to it, the only thing the Government has to do is tell the repig bigots tough shit. It is a civil rights issue and the recognition that this push for a ban on same-sex marriage is a religious one that should be over looked by the Government. Because they are not to recognize the establishment of religion or restrict the exercise thereof.
And since that is the actual case, it is in fact a non debatable issue. IMO

| 9. Exactly, and not only non-debatable, but popular. |
|
The "unpopularity of gay marriage" as an issue is rooted in the fact that its framed as a debate about a religious issue, marriage, when in reality its a constitutional issue. There are lots of heteros who's personal religious idea is that marriage is between a man and woman, but who recognize the legal rights of other to hold other beliefs. Joe Biden is one of them, but I don't think he's an exception. When people really understand the issue, I'm convinced its a majority opinion.

| 3. The fact that this is even a debate proves that sexual minorities are second-class citizens. |
|
It's disgusting. There's no excuse for some of the awful bigotry I've seen on DU. Especially since the VP debate - gays expressing totally justified disappointment with Joe Biden's stated position on gay civil rights are assumed to be PUMAs or potential GOP defectors and subjected to loyalty tests. We've clearly got a long way to go, and that's really sad. We're willing to throw fellow progressives to the wolves, and why? Because conservative psychos disapprove of how they like to have sex? WHAT THE FUCKING FUCK?
