A friend of mine got an E-Mail from a religious Palin supporter - and he responded
A friend of mine (who posts here occasionally) forward a set of E-Mails between a relative and himself. He's a pretty smart old boy, as you will see.

Here is the E-Mail he was sent a cousin's husband:

"Remember to pray for Sarah Palin before, during and after the debate
Thursday night. Whatever your political persuasion, you can pray for
God's protection on this woman who has not attempted to hide her
dependence on Him. . But if God truly has a
plan for Sarah to be an "Esther" for our nation, whether or not she
reaches the White House, He will use her and will not forsake her. He
will respond to our prayers and do what is right for her and for His
people."

Here is the response he gave:

"Strange request. If God has a plan for her, He doesn't need prayers to know what that plan is. If he doesn't have such a plan for her to reach the White House, then to ask otherwise is to pray against God's will."

1. "In the shadows of their churches, who knows what they pray?"
On the occasion of Nick Reynolds' death (founding member of the Kingston Trio), it's hard to get away from the truth of the old folk songs, like the line above, penned by Phil Ochs.

3. Prayers like that are basically "whining to God."
Whining about wanting something they clearly have no understanding of.

4. Clearly your friend has no idea how this prayer thing works.`
Because...umm...well...The Lord moves in mysterious ways.

So there. Nya nya nya.

5. Can God make a woman so phony, even he can't tell what she is really like?
What a conundrum.

7. makes sense
It's actually a broad indictment of any kind of prayer that seeks to make things turn out a certain way. If this God fellow is as powerful and knowledgeable as they say he is, what business do we have telling him what to do?

8. I love that response
The spoken prayers I've heard all my life are a combination of flattery and wheedling.

They seem equally ineffective, but that never seems to discourage the prayerful.

10. This attitude is why I'm more of a Deist bent
Why should God rearrange the natural order of things or His plans because I asked Him to? It's like that joke about the little boy praying before bed, asking God to please make Wichita the capital of Kansas. His parents ask him why he asked God that, and he says, "Because that's what I put down on my test today."

13. Look, don't fuck things up for me here
You gotta start small, then work your way up to the trophy wife worth millions and seven mansions.

God don't just reach into the big goodie bag and pull out a lotto win on the first go round, doncha know?

You gotta try and sneak up to it first.

My advice to you is ask The Big Guy for, oh, I dunno, a distant relative you never knew you had croaking and leaving you ten grand.

Then go from there.
