Colorful quotes from the past....
I am preparing to teach my journalism class and reviewing the reading assignment, the textbook chapter on "interviewing." The author pulled out a few examples to illustrate "colorful quotes/poison darts" that made me laugh, so I thought I'd pass them along. Guess who said this about whom:

A) "______ is the kind of politician who would cut down a redwood tree and then mount the stump to make a speech for conservation."

B) "_________'s foreign policy experience seems mainly from having breakfast at the International House of Pancakes."

C) He is "lower than the regurgitated filth of vultures."

A) Adlai Stevenson on Richard Nixon
B) Pat Buchanan on Bill Clinton
C) J.Edgar Hoover on columnist Jack Anderson

1. My Favorite Riposte is This:
John Montagu, the Earl of Sandwich: "Sir, I do not know whether you will die on the gallows or of the pox."

John Wilkes: "That, sir, depends on whether I embrace your principles or your mistress."

3. Quips from the king of eff u
with Bessie Braddock, early socialist/feminist

Bessie Braddock: "Sir, you are drunk."
Winston Churchill: "Madam, you are ugly. In the morning, I shall be sober."

with Nancy Astor who teamed with her husband and the Balfour's to transform Trans-Jordan into I/P.

Nancy Astor: "Sir, if you were my husband, I would give you poison."
Winston Churchill: "Madam, if I were your husband, I would take it."

More quotes from the mean old man.
