Well, add my job to the pile of wreckage. Add my whole company, in fact.

Well, add my job to the pile of wreckage. Add my whole company, in fact.
Early this summer, half of my company was sold for $168 million. People going to the new company were moved to one side of the building until a new building could be found. People were hired to replace some of the folks who's jobs overlapped between the departments that were sold and the departments that were staying. My department (one of the departments not sold off) was assured that this influx of cash would mean great things for us and our future here. It was a done deal.

Except it wasn't. Today we got a two sentence email saying the sale fell through. No influx of cash and now some redundant positions.

That's going to suck pretty hard. I hate this job but it's a job.

4. Thanks. I suppose it could be worse. I could actually like this job.
Part of me would love to get a severance package and go because I really, really hate this place. But given the fact that, you're right, lots of people are going to be out looking for jobs, this is scary indeed.

Thanks for the support.

2. I'm sorry for you, but this exact thing has happened to tens of millions of Americans
over the last 8 years. It didn't happen because the bailout failed. It happened because 28 years of supply-side, "free market" rule has destroyed our economy.

Job security in America is an illusion.

6. I wasn't implying it happened as a direct result of the events of today. Although
I suspect the loan dried up today for obvious reasons. This country has been managed like my company (terribly) for too long.

9. Thanks Finnfan!
Don't stand around like friends at a funeral! ;) I'll be alright. I truly do hate this place, and I haven't lost my job *yet*. So I'll be glad to leave here and hopefully I'll be a bit prepared. Luckily I'm a graphic designer and have a whole network of friends who freelance and make a decent living at it. That's what I'll do.

Thanks for the  Right back atcha!

5. I am so sorry to hear that.
I am afraid that you won't be alone. Too many people are unaware off how the whole financial mess will affect them personally.

I am wishing you the best for your future. I hope you'll find a job soon.

12. Thanks tandot.
I know I won't be alone, sadly. At least I'm getting a little warning. I still have this job, however shitty, for the time being. It may end tomorrow, next week, or not for months. And I can freelance. A bad economy is actually good for freelance designers where I live. Nobody wants to hire a designer full-time and pay them benefits, so they hire freelancers on a project by project basis. I'm on my husband's insurance (and his job is about as stable as a job gets these days), so I'll be fine.

15. It will. I haven't lost the job yet, so I have some time. Lots of people get no
warning at all. Although in this economy, everyone should really be prepared. Anyway, thank you.

18. That's happened twice, with big steps down in income each time.
I'm okay now though, for a while I guess. If it happens again, it'll be worse, because I'm 60 next year, harder to get a job, and I just lost a bunch in this phony "free market" economy. My solution is that we all ought to just move in together.

Good Luck to you grace!! Don't let the bastards win by getting you down!!!

20. I'm sorry to hear that patrice.
We may have to all move in together. LOL!

Thanks. I'll be alright. I'm more worried about some coworkers who don't have a working significant other and won't have insurance.

17. My job is directly effected, as well.
My position is essentially providing due diligence prior to financial transactions associated with real commercial property (think industrial properties, shopping centers ...) . With no (or very limited) paper/ credit transactions ... my job has come to a standstill ... banks are not initiating projects, have put a "hold" on projects or have outright canceled projects. This means no "billability" for me ... in my industry this will not be tolerated long.

19. I hope your job is saved. This sort of thing is really hard.
I worked for a failed bank once, in the workout group. We recovered alot of money for the Govt.

I'm afraid my husband could lose his job in a year if the banks go through failure. He works for a company that does business with alot of banks. I am in favor of some sort of bailout that would prop up the credit markets.

Hang in there. Come here to vent.

22. Thank Ilsa. I hope my job is saved as well.
I'd like to leave on my own terms, not ones dictated by this company. And it's not like they'll offer a severance package, they never have before.
