Texas House Passes Bill To Override Mandatory HPV Vaccines

March 14, 2007 3:32 p.m. EST

Matthew Borghese - All Headline News Staff Writer

Austin, TX (AHN) - The Texas House has voted to overturn an order by Governor Rick Perry which would have mandated that all young girls entering school receive a human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine.

The vote to overturn the executive order was 119-21, and will now go to the Senate. The bill will still need to pass Governor Perry's desk, who is expected to veto it. However, under Texas law, the legislature can then vote to override the veto. The 119-vote majority is enough in the House to issue such an override, however, the popular support for the bill in the Senate has yet to be counted.

Perry spokesman Krista Moody says, "Governor Perry's executive order on HPV would help to protect 95 percent of young women in Texas against the strains of HPV that cause cervical cancer."

"The governor believes we should protect as many young women as possible - rich and poor, insured and uninsured - while maintaining parents' rights to opt their daughter out of receiving the vaccine."

However, State Representative Dennis Bonnen (R-Angleton) who helped author the new legislation says it "will not take away the option for a single girl or a single family in this state to choose to vaccinate a child. It simply says a family must make that choice, not a state government."

4. From what I read, it wasn't mandatory. You could opt out.
The way it was set up, you were "automatically" enrolled to get it, but you have to voluntarily opt out if you didn't want it. This way, parents who don't care either way would have their kids vaccinated anyway. Only the religious right would end up not having their kids take the vaccine.
