Gen. Pace
It's hard to know what kinds of naughty thoughts Pace is trying to suppress. But we do know that he chose a career in which he spends a lot of time with other men and occasionally showers with them.

Perhaps he should take some time off and try to figure out where those negative feelings are coming from.

1. And perhaps
just perhaps. Every homophobe is not a closeted homosexual, but just a homophobe. Ever think of that possibility?

2. Well , sure

I am not saying that repressed self-loathing is necessarily the cause. Or, maybe he hates himself for some other reason. Or, maybe he's just a world-class prick.

4. Again, keep in mind just because someone loathes gay people,
Edited on Wed Mar-14-07 09:47 AM by cboy4
that doesn't mean it's a sign that they're gay themselves and/or trying to suppress their "gayness." You know?

It's really tiresome, even if it's an innocent response, to keep hearing DUers insinuate that homophobes like Pace must really be gay deep down inside.

(There's an ugly trend of trying to associate being gay with being bad, which is what we see practically every time we learn that a Republican is gay.) -- Foley, Haggard, Gannon, etc.

There are straight people who do hate gays (lots, in fact,) and that shouldn't be so friggen difficult to realize and accept.

When someone is arrested for burning down a synagogue, do you automatically say to yourself, "oh, he must really be a Jew deep down inside?"

No, you say he's probably antisemitic....that he's probably a white supremacist. That he probably dislikes Jewish people.

General Pace is a homophobe who happens to have a lot of Ann Coulter-like, (what I would argue are anti-Christian thoughts) swirling around his bigoted head.

Stop placing the blame for this hateful rhetoric on the shoulders of gay people.

The fact of the matter is straight people are overwhelmingly responsible for gay bigotry. Period.

Peter Pace dislikes gay people and he believes they aren't qualified to serve our country. Period.

Are we surprised? Look at the company he keeps for goodness sake.

edit..horrible wording

5. Excellent post, Cboy
I never see people asking if a cross burner was black, so it never fails to amaze me that some DUers are so quick to declare homophobes suppressed gays.

6. I think the reason some suggest that at times is because it can be hidden.
You can't hide being black. But I don't think that's the case with this ahole Pace. He's just another ahole bigot.

7. His negative feelings are coming from the fact that he's a hateful bigot
Plain and simple.

It's rare that homophobia is fueled by repressed homosexuality, and the notion that every rabid homophobe is a self-hating gay is as mistaken as the notion that every member of the KKK is a self-hating black person.

I was making a joke, OK?

The idea of "methinks thou doest protest too much" has been part of Western civilization for centuries now. Often, people hate most what they see in themselves and want to deny.

But really, I never really expected my post to be taken so seriously or to offend anyone.

9. I wasn't ragging on you
And I don't think any of the others were either. We just keep seeing these posts that equate hateful bigots with GLBT people over and over and it gets very frustrating.

Usually a bigot is just a bigot.

11. A very old joke, and not a good one.
As gently as I can put this: Over DU's illustrious six-year history, we have heard it all: Bush is gay. Rove is gay. Santorum is gay. Hastert is gay. Ann Coulter is gay (when she's not being a man). Giuliani isn't gay, but he's a crossdresser (so it's OK to let people think he might be gay).

You need to understand that nearly every bad guy on the planet has been said to be gay on DU.

Yes, there are bad guys who are gay, or bi. Ted Haggard. Mark Foley. Lesser idiots like Jim Kolbe. Many, many others.

I am among the first to delight in the exposure of any of my enemies whose private lives contradict their public "moral values" -- but only where there is incontrovertible evidence.

Where there is no evidence, there is simply idle speculation, rumormongering, and schoolyard snickering, the implication being 1) gay = bad, thus So-and-So must be gay, and/or 2) all homophobes are secretly gay, thus So-and-So must be gay.

This is not a small thing to many of us who are gay. There are bad people who are gay, just as there are bad people who are straight -- but I doubt you will ever hear the despicable behavior of a straight person equated with the fact that s/he is heterosexual.

You must also understand that this phenomenon is not exclusive to DU. Implying that gay = bad, thus So-and-So must be gay, is one of the oldest tactics of the Radical Right. Years ago, Pat Robertson said: "Many of those people involved (with) Adolf Hitler were Satanists. Many of them were homosexuals. The two things seem to go together. It is a pathology. It is a sickness."

Robertson was not joking. His followers, and many others who don't know any better, believe this filth.

Please do not propagate any more unfounded rumors. You are hurting us when you do it, even if you were only joking.

And remember: Not every homophobe is a self-loathing closet case. White racists aren't secretly black, are they?
