My letter to my Congresscritter--whaddya think?
Edited on Mon Sep-22-08 08:38 PM by Duke Newcombe
Representative Cardoza,

I am <Duke Newcombe>. I am a lifelong Democrat, and was a former <insert Democratic party position here>. My mother regularly donated to the Party, and loved you and respected you as her congressman. I live in your district, and I just wanted to tell you I appreciate your long and productive service to the people of the 18th Congressional District.

I just wanted to remind you what is at stake with the $700BN (and growing) bailout to Wall Street. I am a business owner that is struggling both personally and professionally getting my IT consulting business off the ground. No one is lined up to give me a bail out. I've done everything right: no help is forthcoming for me.

At the same time, President Bush, John McCain, and the Republicans (while trying to throw you and your Democratic colleagues under the bus for this debacle) are trying to hand yet ANOTHER slice of the corporate welfare pie to their business buddies.

Bottom line Mr. Cardoza, we as Democrats cannot let this happen.

If there is a bailout bill that comes up, I would appreciate and implore you to make sure that it comes with the following components:

1. Mandatory renewed and well funded regulation capability for Wall Street
2. No "Golden Parachutes" for failed top officers, and,
3. That there is included help for homeowners, and finally,
4. That there is an equity share in the companies that we bail out.

In my mind, if we allow the Republicans to "roll us" and cause us to settle for anything less--well, in my mind that is criminal.

Once again, I appreciate your consistent leadership in my district, and I hope to meet you someday soon.

Kind Regards,

<Duke Newcombe>

7. Mine is not...
so nice. I am under no illusions about reforming the system.

-----------------------------------

Dear Congressman/Senator ____________,

Trillions for Wall Street gangsters, but I can't even get a decent cost-of-living increase in my Social Security Disability check to buy enough food for the month, and millions of other Americans have no access to health care or higher education.

Just lovely.

NOT ONE PENNY OF TAXPAYER MONEY FOR A WALL STREET BAILOUT!!! NO MORE BLANK CHECKS WITH NO ACCOUNTABILITY OR OVERSIGHT!!!

"Trust me," is just not good enough, ESPECIALLY when it's the Bush administration!!! We don't even know how deep this goes, or if a TRILLION dollars will even be enough to sove anything. Nor do we know who will get the money, what they will do with it, or what the taxpayer will get in return.

And why should the American taxpayer have to bailout the entire global finance system and a host of foreign banks? Something just does NOT add up here!!! This whole thing smells like a giant scam.

WHY NOT BAILOUT THE AMERICAN PEOPLE INSTEAD. HOW ABOUT THAT FOR A CHANGE??? Fix Social Security and fund universal health care for starters.

Oh, I forgot, you Congress and Senate guys don't work for us anyways, do you? Of course not.

You COULD stop the bailout, but you won't. Nope, Bush and his buddies will use the same old fear tactics while giving you the ole bum's rush, and you will obediently sign on the dotted line. (Just like you all did over Iraq, the "War on Terror," and the Patriot Act.)

Then, you will all go back to your states and districts and the TV cameras, and tell everyone about how it was all for their own good...

Oh, don't worry about me (I know you won't), as I have given up on the American Dream AND capitalism, and now I know I have wasted my whole life defending a lie. It's all a big wealth transfer scheme, and just like a Vegas casino, the odds are always stacked in favor of the house.

I darned sure won't waste my time voting for a Democrat or Republican ever again, as it's obvious THEY both serve the Wall Street robber barons, and the American people are just something to plunder and rob.
