So I got an email from a repuke acquaintance this morning...
It is somebody that I used to work with, and we have kept up a casual email correspondence. Lately, I have been getting the usual RW BS emails from him. I have been sending them back to him ripping the emails to shreds. This morning, I had it. I just didn't want any more about that. I like the guy, but no politics. So I sent him this email in reply to an email about how many people Caribou Barbie drew vs how many Biden drew this weekend:

XXXXXX,

Please stop sending me this crap. While Palin may be running for President (since I think McCain will kick the bucket in the next 4 years), Biden is the VP pick. Sorry, but I don't vote with my genitals. And anybody who thinks she will pull true Hillary supporters is sadly mistaken. It is an insult. Let's agree to disagree, I can't take 4 more years of this crap, and neither can the country.

I was surprised when I got this reply back from him:

I send it to you because I know I’ll get an honest answer (which is worth it’s weight in gold these days). I will respect your request but would still enjoy any pro dem materials you may get. I can still be persuaded to vote for Obama if the message is truthful and convincing.

Hope all is well with you

Maybe there is some hope after all. We went through a bit of this 4 years ago with Kerry, and we agreed to disagree at the time. I ripped into him on something he sent me that had been debunked and he said "all you had to do was tell me not to send them to you". So I figured this time, I would just ask nicely and we just wouldn't talk politics. He may be sorry he sent that to me, because he will get a complete answer to every bit of crap he sends me now.

So you really never know who's mind you might change, I am pulling myself up off the floor after I got this.

2. He sounds like that rare (reasonable) Republican
Use logic and truth and keep in touch. Don't go off the deep end with him. Honey attracts more flies than vinegar.

3. Well that turned out a lot better than I thought it was going to.
It's nice to know some people can still keep an open mind.

6. Could be, but here is his response to my email
Edited on Mon Sep-22-08 10:21 PM by MiniMe
edited to add my reply, and then his.

If you truly want feedback, I would be happy to give it to you. Basically, Palin is still a novelty right now, but her popularity is on the wane since Charlie Gibson's interview. And no, I don't think his questions are unfair. To be honest with you, I think that somewhere during the interview Charlie realized that McCain is 72, was probably exposed to agent orange, and has had at least 3 episodes of malignant melanoma and he also won't release his medical records. Somewhere in there, Gibson realized that she very well may be the President and he got scared. It scares the hell out of me too.

McCain is also having a hell of a time with his financial advisors. Phil "father of deregulation" Gramm told us we were a bunch of whiners because we were worried about the economy. He is still an advisor but he is in the background now. And Carly HP President Fiorino or whatever her last name is, who said that Palin and McCain weren't qualified to be a corporate executive like she was, then added Biden and Obama too. I don't want a corporate executive as President, the country is not a company. I want somebody who thinks about what is best for we the people instead of what's good for the big corporations. It's time to stop privatizing the profits and socializing the losses.

Now, are you still sure that you want to keep sending stuff to me? LOL

his reply to me:

Well put! I wish my friend Randy could calmly and, rationally explain his points as you just did, so well! I will enclose to you what Randy sent me, and you will see why I have a hard time coming over. I really think that if the Dems would just ease up on their venom (the way they explain it and the ferocity with which they present it) allot more people would consider Obama!

Did you see where Palin got stuck on Bush doctrine? She had no clue what it was! Do you think Obama made a mistake not choosing Hilary? The Republicans hate her almost as much as Dems hate Bush (note I said almost ;)). Enjoy Randy’s blog below warning it contains profanity, but is really a good read, as only Randy could do this! I particularly liked his nuk-yul-lar war reference.

Yes, I did reply back. I would post what whoever Randy is wrote, but it isn't productive. It states what most of us believe, but the tone is very confrontational. And I agree with him to a point that if you are trying to convince somebody of something, attacking them is not the best strategy. I did say that a lot of us are very angry about things. Not the least of which is the people who skewered John Kerry are the same ones who say you can't criticize McCain because he was a POW. I also said that most of what he hears that he doesn't like is not from Obama, but from some of his supporters who are upset at what the current administration has done to the country.

So he may be playing me for a fool. But, as I told him, keep sending this stuff to me and I will tell him why he is wrong. It may do no good at all, but it might change his misguided ways. I'm thinking of suggesting that he watch Rachel Maddow to get some good viewpoints. She explains her points very well and calmly. I think he may be easier for him to watch than Keith who many times does let his venom show. We love it, I love it, but I think Rachel may be better for him to watch. What do you think?

and the person is even sort of willing to think beyond the propaganda, it never hurts to try and fight the spin & lies with facts so good luck! :)

7. Thanks
I know he isn't happy about the way Georgie is running things. And he sort of realizes that McCain will not change things. I think a lot of it is fear of the unknown. So we'll see how it goes. I have no illusions that I will convert him, so I won't be disapointed if he doesn't change. But if he is willing to listen it doesn't hurt to try. I think he lives in Virginia too so it may be an important vote. Or he lives in Maryland in which case it won't matter much. I think a lot of Repukes are afraid of the unknown, I am afraid of the known at this point.

9. It's true, I see it on the campaign trail locally
I'm running for a council seat, and while I'm going door to door, always the conversation from the well informed for their age, but still fairly clueless Republicans turns to ... "well, I don't want to vote Democratic because I don't want socialized medicine".. (true insane statement, and you know what conversation took place next... "what do you think about our socialized banking system of Wall St?")

In the end, you see their wheels turn and they want to "learn". Truth is, no one has ever given them this opportunity door to door, especially in a local race.

It takes a little extra time to do this, but it's true. An opened mind tends not to close up so fast ever again.

11. Thanks...
I'm on both tickets, since we have the ability to have write in votes cast in the primaries when there are no opposing parties running. I won the Dem race, and got the most Republican write in votes... so... I'm on the Dem and Republican ticket come November. Never thought I'd ever be on a Republican ticket before this!

The real luck is helping the municipality keep its head above water, come Jan 09. What an interesting year it will be...

:hi:
