Ah, here it is, folks, THE TRUTH, forwarded to me by my brain-dead Repub. aunt & uncle... sigh...
Yes, the email subject line was The Truth, and everything below this sentence are NOT my words. :^) Obviously the real gist of what is said below is 'quit giving money to those g-damn lazy-ass n-----s and M------s - they can go get a job like the rest of us, pull themselves up by their bootstraps, blah blah blah blah'.

SO TRUE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

During this election year let's be reminded of these wise words:

* You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.

* You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.

* You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.

* You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down.

* You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.

* You cannot build character and courage by taking away men's initiative and independence.

* You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they could, and should, do for themselves.

Do you recognize the author?

Abraham Lincoln. Very wise words written years ago, and we still don't get it.....

2. Abe also said this:
"Labor is prior to, and independent of, capital. Capital is only the fruit of labor, and could never have existed if labor had not first existed. Labor is the superior of capital, and deserves much the higher consideration."

3. Here is the real author of those quotes:
William J.H. Boetcker
An outspoken political conservative, Rev. Boetcker is perhaps best remembered for his authorship of a pamphlet entitled The Ten Cannots; originally published in 1916, it is often misattributed to Abraham Lincoln. The error apparently stems from a leaflet printed in 1942 by a conservative political organization called the Committee for Constitutional Government; the leaflet bore the title "Lincoln on Limitations" and contained some genuine Lincoln quotations on one side and the "Ten Cannots" on the other, with the attributions juxtaposed (the mistake of crediting Lincoln for having been the source of "The Ten Cannots" has been repeated many times since, most notably by Ronald Reagan in a speech he gave at the 1992 Republican convention in Houston).

6. Republican liars are so cute aren't they? It's too bad Lincoln didn't
say the things above that are attributed to him - too bad for the idiot brigade that is.

The former President, or his speechwriters, evidently swallowed a spurious Lincoln quotation -- a decalogue of "cannots" concocted decades ago by a Presbyterian clergyman. The Rev. William J. H. Boetcker presented the thoughts as his own, written in the spirit of Lincoln. But the qualification vanished as conservative groups snapped up his decalogue, which found its way into the Congressional Record and Look magazine.

6. The "Ten Points" appear every February 12 in newspaper ads honoring Abraham Lincoln. In fact, these aphorisms are from the pen of Reverend William John Henry Boetcker (1873-1962).

* You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.
* You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.
* You cannot help small men by tearing down big men.
* You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.
* You cannot lift the wage-earner by pulling down the wage-payer.
* You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than your income.
* You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.
* You cannot establish sound security on borrowed money.
* You cannot build character and courage by taking away a man's initiative and independence.
* You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves.

asking the rich to pay THEIR FAIR SHARE is not the same as this class-warfare (the rich are winning because they never stop fighting it) cherry picking.

more black-or-white thinking in a world of grays.

11. Point out to them that Lincoln never said these things
http://www.truthorfiction.com/rumors/l/lincoln-quotes.htm

Contrary to what modern Republicans would have you believe, Lincoln was much more socialist in his leanings than is commonly taught (which is why Karl Marx was among those to quickly congratulate him on his re-election).

13. Thanks - although I hadn't looked it up yet, I DID wonder if Lincoln could've really
said all that shit. As for responding to my aunt & uncle, well, here's the deal: my aunt is my mother's younger sister, and they were very close despite arguing big-time on politics in the last few years (my mother passed away in May 2007)... somehow they didn't much before, but I think it's just another example of the country's increased polarization. But anyway, yeah, they drive me nuts, but are very nice to me, have wanted to see me more since my mom has died - which is a natural thing when you're the next-closest surviving relative - and I just hate to permanently sever the relationship. So I very reluctantly try not to say much, and they honestly don't send me that much bullshit either. But it's tenuous. :^)

19. Completely hogwash! Those words did not come from Abraham Lincoln.
Tidbits of Wisdom From Abraham Lincoln-Fiction!

Summary of the eRumor:
Alleged quotes from Abraham Lincoln about the poor, the weak, prosperity, workers, class hatred, and character.

The Truth:
These words are often attributed to Abraham Lincoln, but according to the book They Never Said it: A Book of Fake Quotes, Misquotes, & Misleading Attributions, they are not from Lincoln.

The quotes were published in 1942 by William J. H. Boetcker, a Presbyterian minister. He released a pamphlet titled Lincoln On Limitations, which did include a Lincoln quote, but also added 10 statements written by Boetcker himself.

They were:

1. You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.
2. You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong
3. You cannot help the poor man by destroying the rich.
4. You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.
5. You cannot build character and courage by taking away man's initiative and independence.
6. You cannot help small men by tearing down big men.
7. You cannot lift the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer.
8. You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than your income.
9. You cannot establish security on borrowed money.
10 You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they will not do for themselves.
People who got the pamphlet thought the 10 statements were written by Lincoln and they have been distributed widely under Lincoln's name.
