How about bailing out the poor?
It would cost a hell of lot less than $700 billion dollars to raise every poor American above the poverty line for several years to come. How about bailing out those in substandard housing? Those in homeless shelters? Those eating from dumpsters? Those choosing between food and meds? Those calling churches to pay for necessities? Those wearing clothes that are nearly rags?

How about bailing out those who actually need a bailout, instead of funding golden parachutes for what one angry lawmaker called "the most unsympathetic human beings on the planet?"

1. And now it will drop like a rock.
But the threads that suggest bailing out the middle class from their self-incurred debt will be cheered.

2. It would also do a lot more for the economy,
because there would be an increase in consumer spending. Demand-size economics works a lot better than supply-side. There is capital available to be invested, or we wouldn't have had those speculative frenzies, but it needs to be put into productive enterprises rather than Ponzi schemes. With the dollar tanking, inflation of imported goods may actually provide an incentive to start producing things in America again.

3. Because this country likes "the most unsympathetic human beings on the planet" better?
Sure seems like it.

4. i'm all in favor of that
They should not be struggling to survive, not in this day and age, and not in this country! They need security, so they can build their lives. They just need a chance, They just need a hand. They just need some hope. I totally agree, we should bail out everyone in poverty and give them a chance to start over.

5. Here, here!
I'm a 28 year old self-employed artist with no insurance, no retirement and no golden parachute. I live paycheck to paycheck, can't afford new clothes and eat nutrition-less food because well, that's all I can really afford.

Where the fuck is MY Federally funded bailout?

7. Most of America hates you.
Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but artists and other cultural workers aren't high on America's favorites list - unless of course they are RW radio hosts like Hannity. But to put him in the same category as you is an insult, and I don't want to do that.

Real artists, as far as America is concerned, can go eat cake.

8. Hell, most of DU hates me.
I'm a true independent. Very left of center but still capable of forming my own opinions. A conspiracy theorist to boot, so while they are raping my country and plundering my never-to-be-seen social security, I'm fully aware that they know EXACTLY what they are doing, and will get away with it.

MIHOP!

13. Most of DU hates me, too.
I'm also way left of center, except for a few stubborn exceptions which I have to keep my mouth shut about (most of the time). I also absolutely refuse to shut up about poverty, which has a way of making people very uncomfortable. And I'm a bit of a conspiracy theorist too, although I haven't decided whether MIHOP or LIHOP is the case. Either way, there are evil people in power, and they are doing evil things.

14. My idea: bail out first time home buyers
who are about to lose their houses. No vacation home buyers, not the folks trading up, not the house flippers. Ensure that these "mortgage backed securities" are worth something, but do it from the bottom UP this time.
