Portman slightly off-message

Former congressman Rob Portman may have been passed over for the number two spot by John McCain, but he has been cheerfully performing his duties as a surrogate for the McCain campaign, mainly by popping up on the cable news talking-head shows and toeing the party line.
Sunday, though, on CNN's Late Edition with Wolf Blitzer, the Terrace Park Republican parted ways with his presidential candidate on a point that McCain has been making on the stump in recent days as he tries to jump out front on the Wall Street crisis.
McCain has been calling for the firing of Christopher Cox, the former California congressman whom President Bush made chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission.
The SEC chairman is appointed to a fixed term; and it's not entirely clear that a president could "fire" anyone from the position. But Portman, one of Cox's old House colleagues, made it clear on CNN that he doesn't think that is necessary. Cox, Portman said, has done "a decent job in a very tough situation, so I don't share the fact that Chris Cox ought to go," although he did say the SEC has been "lax" and "should have done more."
