Florida Freeper: FL will be hard for Obama, we are working hard on surpressing the vote
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2086545/posts#comment

Florida is going to be very tough for him. We recently rejected over 85,000 applications for voter registration, enacted a new law effective 9/1/08 that requires an EXACT match of name and address to an existing data base (SS, MVA, etc), and did a recent felon purge from the voter roles.

But anyway, I think I will go volunteer later on today just to spite him and his union man who just knocked on my door.

===========================

As we all know, many people who "had similar names to felons" were OOOPS purged in FL and of course they are up to their filthy tricks.

I think there should be a MASSIVE INFORMATION EFFORT BEFORE THE ELECTION to make sure that people who have recently had their homes foreclosed, students, soldiers, basically whoever is not home for any reason, they will try to steal your vote. Everyone needs to check their status and make sure none of the newly enacted LOL "voter fraud" regs affect their right to vote.

3. Absolutely appalling.
It is absolutely appalling how they are proud of screwing people out of the right to vote.

It's perfectly OK to pass laws to screw people out of their rights unless it happens to affect issues they hold dear like, say the second amendment. Try to take away that individual right and the dumbass Freepers will riot in the streets. Take away the right to vote? Sure, no problem, that's A-OK in Freeperville.

Assholes.

I seriously hope after Obama wins he sets up a massive investigation into voter fraud and/or supports widesweeping anti-election fraud legislation.

4. There are a lot of lawyers who work for the Republicans and post on Free Republic
These are the same people who participated in the "Brooks Brothers riot" to stop the recount in Florida in 2000, and the many more who worked behind the scenes in courtrooms. I would believe this freeper. We know that the Republicans have been suppressing the vote in Florida, Ohio, Missouri, and many other states - especially states with large African American communities.

76. Oh the Obama campaign knows about this - I personally talked with them about it last week
They have as of now over 500 attorneys state wide with more signing up every day that will be fighting challenges to voters for all kinds of things.

For instance, Gov. Crist actually signed a new law that makes it a little easier for felons to have their voting rights restored - but the records of who has had their rights restored is NOT at the various Supervisor of Elections offices even though they have the records of who has been convicted of a felony. The individual must register to vote, wait to be rejected, get their record or restoration from the Department of Correction, take them into the Supervisors offices and try again. We are trying to be very proactive and help the people get their records before they are asked.

We are also recommending that the people who are registering new voters make sure that their forms exactly match the info on their driver's licenses since that is the main database used to match info for the "No match, no vote" law.

We are very lucky in this county that our Supervisor of Elections,Ion Sancho, prefers to give the benefit of doubt as much as allowed by law. But he is hobbled by what has been passed and is being enforced.

13. Umm.....
I'm almost sure that the freep is lying. Trust me. I'm in Florida. We've been rained like a Romanian gymnast regarding voter registration laws. If they kicked out, 85,000 new registrants, it wasn't on our end. I can't speak for all of the Obama people, be I know that we here in N. Florida are complying with the rules of the state, and our people are getting their cards in the mail.

About that new registration law, I don't quite think it's going to be as effective against the Obama campaign as one would think. First of all, I don't think the law even takes effect until next year, and secondly, many of the people who I've registered have common sense to change their addresses.

If this were such a big deal, the Obama people would be all over this like they are in MI.

44. I wrote to Florida's Governor. My letter is as follows:
Edited on Sat Sep-20-08 02:12 PM by medicswife
Dear Governor Crist,

I am writing to you in regard to a disturbing article which I just read in the South Florida Sun-Sentinel that details three major problems with the laws in Florida that make it much harder for new voters to register, and in many cases disqualifies eligible voters for onerous reasons. I am sure you know of what I speak, but just in case, I will iterate them for you.

1. The termination of the standstill in League of Women Voters of Fla v. Cobb. which can only mean that the State of Florida now has the intention of shutting down Voter Registration Drives.

2. On Thursday, April 3rd, the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta reversed the December decision of a U.S. District Court Judge in Gainsville to block a statewide election law that had kept 14,000 eligible Florida citizens off of the voter rolls, and could prevent tens of thousands more from registering and voting in the 2008 elections.

3. On March 25th, a federal district court in Miami rejected a challenge to yet another portion of Florida's voter registration law that traps voters based on meaningless mistakes. This provision prevents would-be voters who timely submit a voter registration application before the registration deadline, but inadvertently omit information from the form, to correct the application if the omission is discovered after the registration deadline.

As I am not a citizen of Florida, you may wonder why I am writing to you. It is because I am a military spouse, and my husband enlisted in the U.S. Army to support and defend the Constitution of the United States of America. Written into the Constitution, as I am sure you are aware, is the right to vote. The state of Florida in my opinion is doing more to damage that fundamental right and strip it from Americans, especially poor and elderly Americans, than any other state in the Union. It sickens me to think that as my dear husband spends a second 15 month tour in Iraq, defending the rights of all Americans and pursuing those same dear rights for the Iraqi people, my fellow Americans are being denied one of their fundamental rights.

It is with respectful indignation that I request you reverse the damage that has been done and instead work toward making it easier, not harder for Floridians to vote.

Sincerely,

my name etc.

on edit: It was really hard to be so non-partisan in the letter, especially the part about my husband "pursuing the same dear rights for the Iraqis" when I know he's only over there for the oil. :(

79. Sec. of State Kurt Browning is planning to enforce "No Match, No Vote" this year
'No match, no vote' law to be enforced
A controversial voter registration law that requires Floridians to have their identification match up with a state or federal database will be enforced.
Posted on Tue, Sep. 09, 2008

TALLAHASSEE --
State elections officials will resume enforcement of a controversial state law that requires Floridians to have their identification match up with a state or federal database in order to register to vote.

Secretary of State Kurt Browning sent notice to the state's 67 supervisors of elections on Friday that the 2006 law, which has been on hold for the last year pending court rulings, would take effect again Sept. 8.

The result is that voters whose identification doesn't match with state files on Election Day will be given a provisional ballot and two days to prove their identity for their ballot to count.

Voting rights activists, who had unsuccessfully challenged the constitutionality of the law, blasted the decision, saying it allows the state to rely on what they consider error-prone databases in the month before voter registration ends on Oct. 6.

``This 11th-hour decision is an ill-advised move to apply a policy the state has never enforced in its current form, at a time when registration activity is at its highest, said Alvaro Fernandez of the Southwest Voter Registration and Education Project, a plaintiff in the case along with the NAACP and the Haitian-American Grassroots Coalition.

Browning acknowledged that the court case prompted the state to make changes to its voter match process during the 2008 legislative session but he said the voting rights proponents are now being sore losers.

''They just don't want to admit the system might just work'' so they are ''loose with the facts,'' he said.

For example, their claim that Florida could "disenfranchise tens of thousands'' is irresponsible, he said. "What basis do they have that its thousands? How do they know it's not millions?"
http://www.miamiherald.com/news/florida/story/679629.html

Maybe the Freeper is getting his figures from Browning's comments?

FOCUS | Obama Rallies Florida

http://www.truthout.org/article/obama-rallies-florida

Beth Reinhard, Patricia Mazzei and Trenton Daniel, The Miami Herald: "Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama campaigned in South Florida Friday for the first time in three months amid what he called 'the most serious financial crisis in generations,' telling a crowd dominated by women that his Republican rival failed to understand their struggles. Speaking to a nearly packed house of 8,000 people at the University of Miami's BankUnited Center, Obama poked fun at McCain for speaking positively about the 'fundamentals' of the economy and proposing a new financial regulatory agency for financial institutions. 'I think it's clear Sen. McCain is a little panicked right now,' Obama said to the delight of the raucous crowd."

16. All the south is uphill
Obama will need at least a 6% lead to win in states like Florida. 56% of the vote to win, simply because of the massive voter caging and suppression.

This is what gives me hope for an Obama presidency: Obama the organizer will be able to stop voter suppression and caging from the white house, which would KILL THE RETHUGLICAN PARTY FOR THE NEXT 40 YEARS!!! See they can't win without stealing it. If we can remove theft from the voting system, we can beat back fascism for the next generation. We will have done our bit.

85. Thanks for the link to contact the campaign
However I think that it's best to continue calling and to call the central DNC people and ask to speak to staff. Any city in your state will do, but the people have to be paid staff and know who is who.

35. This is why I said that Florida will be tough. They are too bold with their suppression.
Edited on Sat Sep-20-08 01:46 PM by McCamy Taylor
What Obama can do is focus the national media spotlight on Florida by setting up hotlines so that every person who is entitled to vote who is turned away at the polls calls a number and gets his or her name and vote on a list which is compiled and submitted to the press. To do this, Obama needs to make sure that Dems in Florida know what is going down before the election so that they are ready to make the calls after the cast their provisional votes at the precincts.

Then, Obama will know how many provisional votes were cast for him and he will be able to tell the press. And he will be able to send in enough volunteers to assist all those people in getting to the court houses to get their votes counted.

This will keep the press from calling the start early and will make the nation notice the suppression.

45. I know they had a hotline up at the front page of the site
during the primaries, but I don't see anything similar now. I hope they do this before early voting starts .. it's getting close. I know Obama's lawyers have filed suit against the caging maneuver to disenfrancise based on home foreclosures, so hopefully they are up on all of this.

I guess it's about informing people but what if they already have a discrepancy between their license and their voter registration.

43. Here's an email I got from our BrowardForObama group
Please pass this on:

I was just reminded by one of our Campaign Coordinators that Florida has a "no-match, no vote" policy - which means that if your driver's license data doesn't match your voter registration information, they may not let you vote.

link

So check and make sure the information on both your license and your voter registration card matches.

Your Driver's License No. and/or last 4 digits of social security number needs to match your voter registration information.

The address on your ID/Driver's license should match as well, or you could be challenged at the polls for not voting in your precinct.

Voter registration for the General Election is open until October 6th - and you can register or request a new (updated) registration card here:

link

If the information on your driver's license is incorrect (old address, etc.) you can request a new license online here: https://www7.hsmv.state.fl.us/VirtualOffice/faces/lobby.jsp
(They reuse your old photo)

You can also register or check your registration information at the Barack Obama Website.

link

Early Voting in Florida starts October 20th. Google your county's Board of Elections website for early voting times and locations.

Please pass this on to your friends and family members in Florida. We don't want a repeat of 2000.
=======

To add to that, there is a great diary at DailyKos about voter information here: link

DeclareYourself is a good source for information: link

and a new website for Election Protection at 866OurVote.org link with a hotline at 1-866-OUR-VOTE (1-866-687-8683)

68. We need an ad informing people how to check their voting status
While they still have time to put in for a change of address or whatever they have to do....

Do students whose ID reflects their summer (parents) address have to vote absentee?

And also at the polls to help any voters who are unfairly "challenged" by Rethugs.

An ad campaign would also point out to the general public how Rethugs are trying to steal the vote again!

80. Some of that info is wrong according to what our organizers are using for training
to register voters here in Tallahassee. You said:
Your Driver's License No. and/or last 4 digits of social security number needs to match your voter registration information.

According to what our FOs are saying if the applicant has ever had a Florida Driver's License or ID, they CANNOT use the last four digits of their SSN to register to vote. They MUST put their DL or ID number for their identification. Please check on that - I will double check with our office Monday.

As I've said in other threads, I'm 100% confident that Obama/Biden would win in a landslide if all votes were counted fairly. But if the votes are never counted to begin with, this country is fucked. :evilfrown:

59. How do you check your voter status in Florida?
As a Miami resident, I was able to check my own voter registration status here:

http://www.miamidade.gov/elections/ab-status.asp

I found that site with a Google search that specifically involved the term, "Miami-Dade".

However, finding out how to check your status in other parts of Florida seems to be much more difficult than it should be.

I did a Google search for "check florida voter status" and got this as the very first hit:

http://www.neighborhoodlink.com/lauderhill/saintgeorge/genpage/200966378.html

Here's what this page says:
Check your Florida voter registration status now!
Will My Vote Count?
If you are a Florida registered voter you need to check your voter registration status to make sure that it is up-to-date and active!
For the first time, you can do this ONLINE and FREE at www.willmyvotecount.org.

Click on "Will My Vote Count?" in the Community Hotlinks and it will take you directly to the website. Share this information with your friends!

The "willmyvotecount" URL doesn't even appear as a clickable link on that page, and the URL only took me to a "The page cannot be displayed" message, so that doesn't work, at least, not for me.

The second Google hit was the "CAN I VOTE?" site at http://www.canivote.org

That's a national site that asks you to select your state, so I selected Florida. That took me to the Florida Division of Elections at http://election.dos.state.fl.us/voter-registration/voter-reg.shtml

There's a lot of information on that site about how to register, but I was unable to find any way to check your status there either.

My conclusion is that there doesn't seem to be an easy way for Florida voters in general to verify their voting status on the web, or if there is one, it's not very easy to find.

'...since leaving the Miramar City Commission in 1997, Lewis has dodged complaints of unethical behavior, moved to Fort Lauderdale, and refashioned himself as the go-to techie for Broward's political machines, both Democratic and Republican. Lewis' company, Strategic Technologies & Research, analyzes voter data for local political campaigns. Lewis is also an old-fashioned wheeler-dealer, an operative who most recently ran a campaign to oppose the slot machine referendum in Broward and Miami-Dade counties -- but not before offering his services to the gambling industry for a cool $214,000.

Told about Lewis' candidacy in America's Venice, Miramar resident Sherry Abdin gasped, "Oh, God help us." Six years ago, Abdin, a community activist in Miramar, tried to persuade the Broward State Attorney's Office to bring criminal charges against Lewis for mixing public interests and personal profits. "Dan Lewis was the puppet master of Miramar," Abdin contends.'

75. can anyone turn the freeper post
in to the police? I am sure our DoJ would hop right on it; after all, they spent millions trying to find voter fraud by illegals (dems) but never could....meanwhile, back at the ranch, they assist election fraud on our tax dollars...thank you Muck-ass-ey....

but someone in this country might still care about the constitution, no? They can't just declare that they purged eligible, legit voters for supposed reasons (completely admitting that they don't believe their own challenges but are in fact looking for reasons to challenge).

I also think perhaps it is time to return the favor. No one ever stands in repuke areas and questions their right to vote, but why not? Recently married, but no name change? see ya. etc.

I signed up to video the vote (on top of volunteering to drive people to polls), which means if there is a problem at a precinct, I run down there with my camera and interview the person and then upload it asap to the video the vote site, who will post things on youtube as well as compile video for any court cases.

Oh yeah, I also have a gun and no freeper is taking it away from me. What sad little cowards, threatening to hang liberals? Have no fear, the elitists are here to save you from yourself and rescue the country and democracy so you little rats can thrive in your mommy's basement. We protect your right to vote, even though you are lower than average! ( I guess if we are elites, they are the lower than average, no? LTA)
