So when are we getting our emergency preparedness forum?
Fires? Hurricanes? Global financial collapse?

I think this forum is long overdue!

K&R this for maximum visibility! :bounce:

1. Why wait?
Some of us are using an existing forum, _Frugal and Energy Efficient Living_

Come join us and liven things up!

4. This is not adequate.
Emergency preparedness is an important enough topic to warrant its own forum instead of squatting on a little-used forum.

6. It's a start.
It's a relatively inactive group and new threads don't disappear within an hour like in GD.

If there are more active threads in the group that deal with emergency preparedness, I think it's more likely that Admin will see the utility of a whole new forum dedicated to the subject.

10. Why would we mind?
I don't think there's any part of frugal living and energy efficiency that couldn't lend itself to emergency preparedness.

Conversely, many ideas for emergency preparedness could well be applied to an ordinarily frugal/energy efficient lifestyle.

11. Which is the reasoning the Mods could use for not starting an EP forum. n/t

14. Could go either way.
As "frugal living," it's not very busy. After all, how many different ways can you extol the virtues of clothes lines, white vinegar, and CFL/LED lighting?

However, if it gets a lot busier when dealing with "emergency preparedness," we could then point Admin to that fact and say, "It's time. This little group deserves to be bumped up to a real Forum and have the name changed to include 'Emergency Preparedness.'"

Asking for a new EP forum has not succeeded in several months. This is an alternative route that, if successful, would show Admin the real potential.

There are currently two EP threads going. How about jumping in?

_A timely topic: Emergency Preparedness._

and

_Can you survive...?_, which I started to link to a thread here in GD that was busy for a while but is now buried on page 14.

15. Maybe what we can do is start each EP thread with "EP"?
I will read your threads shortly.

18. I'm AGAINST this FORUM...I don't like "boxing off crisis" in some Forum where most DU'ers won't See
I feel strongly about this. Yes...there are many DU'ers who are dedicated to their "Forums" but many of us still hit the DU Front Page, GD and GDP plus LBN. We don't have time to go digging in FORUMS to find the latest news. To put "Emergency Preparedness" out there would mean those in an "Emergency" looking for info with limited time on the net (power outages, floods, crisis) would not be looking for DU FORUMS..but want the LATEST up on the most popular forms on DU.

Just Saying...

19. Such a forum would SAVE you time.
The Front Page, GD, GDP, and LBN often move so fast that threads sink unless they're constantly kicked. And then, if you want to refer back to something specific, you can't find them again unless you've bookmarked them.

An EP forum would enable you to add that to your "customized forums" so that you can check it whenever you want without having to search for relevant threads. I currently have 11 topic forums and groups at the top of my main page -- in addition to GD, GDP, and LBN -- and I start every day by checking each one so I don't miss anything important.

21. Yeah...but not all of us are in "CRISIS" all the time to keep checking a dedicated Forum...
Folks look to DU for Immediate Crisis/News.

Although I think maybe having a Crisis Preparedness Forum...would be a good idea. Many DU'ers have posted good things about "how to be prepared" that go off to archives. Our long time DU'er "SoCalDem" being one who has posted time after time great tips with lots of views as to how we can "be ready."

I guess I could go with a Forum like that.. but not one that Mods would push stuff into when a genuine Emergency comes up that DU'ers need instant info.

If you get what I'm saying.

22. I get what you're saying now.
The primary news forums would be the "news" source for any crisis, yes -- certainly not a less used forum or group.

What we've been talking about for an Emergency Preparedness Forum is exactly what you refer to as the "how to be prepared" thing.

We've already started. Check these threads out:

_A timely topic: Emergency Preparedness._

_Can you survive...?_

Let's do this!

24. I could go with that...and "So Cal" has good stuff in archives if we can get her to dig it out...
along with others. I just don't want it to end up as a sub-forum for all news over the "next disaster" (and there will be more) to be pushed off into. Thanks for understanding where I was coming from.

25. Absolutely agreed.
The purpose of the EP group would not be disaster news, but how to be prepared.

By all means, ask SoCal if she can repost her stuff!

ColbertWatcher suggested that any new threads dealing with Emergency Preparedness include "EP" at the beginning of the subject line so they'll be easy to keep track of.

We're trying to get threads on this subject over to _this group_ to see how it works out. In time, hopefully, the group can be renamed to include "Emergency Preparedness" in the title -- and maybe even get upgraded to "forum" status!
