Student auctions virginity, sparks online debate

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A 22-year-old woman in the United States is publicly auctioning her virginity to pay for her college education, sparking a heated online debate about sex and morality.

The student from San Diego, California, who is using the pseudonym Natalie Dylan for "safety reasons," said she had no moral dilemma with her decision and found it "empowering".

But few bloggers sided with her and some suspected her intentions.

"I don't think auctioning my virginity will solve all my problems," she told celebrity television show The Insider on Wednesday. "But it will create some financial stability. I'm ready for the controversy, I know it will come along. I'm ready to do this."

"We live in a capitalist society. Why shouldn't I be allowed to capitalize on my virginity?" she added.

Psst! Don't tell the Christians. They think capitalism is good for moral values! lol

What a dumbshit.

14. No it's not.
The Mann Act is pointed at organized rings who transport women between states for prostitution, and has typically only been enforced against rings engaging in prostitution in states where it's a crime. There is NOTHING in the act that would prevent a resident of California from moving to Nevada to become a prostitute, which is essentially what she's doing. Her sister already works there.

4. Someone posted this earlier today. This is prostitution. Of course
someone tried to justify prostitution to me after I said that. To make the record clear, I am not judging. IMHO, prostitution should be legalized.

Where, according to the article, the girl's sister is currently employed.

The virgin has a degree in women's studies.

12. Wow. I'm not going to judge but it sucks that she feels that she needed to go to this extent
to solve her problems. Well, it sounds like it's legal and as long as she doesn't regret it, it should be okay.

Just that... ewww... who are the guys who want to buy someone's virginity? I find the guys gross, not the woman for doing this.

13. I wonder how many men she has really slept with.
Or which seedy bar she'll pick someone up in the night before she loses her "virginity." There's a sucker born every minute.

17. Good point. There's no way to prove virginity.
Hymen's aren't evidence.

She's fairly young so, assuming she wasn't promiscuous or dating John Holmes, her body should be able to "tighten up" to a near-virginal state by just abstaining for about a year. Not a bad trade off for her million dollars, if she gets that much.

15. According to a news show a few hours ago, bidding is up to $300,000
The highest confirmed bid was either $200k or $250k, but she'd received an unconfirmed new bid of $300k.

My wife looked at me when the anchor read that and said, "Crap, and I just gave it away for free. I could have bought a house, but just ended up with an apology and sticky underwear!"

I LOL'ed!

19. One of the few jobs where "inexperiece' is a selling point.
In fact, I can't seem to come with any other jobs in which it's considered a virtue. "Inexperienced Brain Surgeon Wanted"?

21. I never understood that, she could give it up for
a dinner and a movie, no problem. She tries to make a buck and she's a criminal. What if she would barter say a new car for her virginity would that be illegal?

22. George Carlin didn't understand it either
"I do not understand why prostitution is illegal. Why should prostitution be illegal? Selling is legal. Fucking is legal. Why isn't selling fucking legal? You know, why should it be illegal to sell something that's perfectly legal to give away? I can't follow the logic on that at all. Of all the things you can do to a person, giving someone an orgasm is hardly the worst thing in the world. In the army they give you a medal for spraying napalm on people. Civilian life, you go to jail for giving someone an orgasm."
