Did Bin Laden get away with attacking us on 9/11?
Seven years later it seems to me that he did. Can anybody convince me otherwise.

Destroyed our country in ways even Osama couldn't have dreamed.

The prick is sitting in a cave somewhere, laughing his ass off every day.

Fuckface turned out to be a really effective terrorist.

9. Since he originally denied it, while nonetheless congratulating those
who DID, that is a point in doubt. If he HAD done it he would have claimed responsibility, since he obviously favored it happening. If he had not favored it happening, he would not have offered congratulations to the perpetrators. Since he had already claimed responsibility for the embassy bombings he knew he would gain nothing by denying responsibility if he HAD done it, therefore, if he HAD done it he would have claimed responsibility for it.

When nobody else stepped up to claim responsibility, he THEN said he did it.

I have my doubts.

39. Ironically, this is the real heart of the issue
I think two viable options are in play- Bin Laden worked for us(I use past tense since he's currently dead) and executed the attack at Bushco's order, or Bushco did it themselves and picked a useful scapegoat.

IMO it doesn't matter- the breadcrumbs lead to the same place, the ultimate "decider" on such an attack. No order from the top would have meant 3,000+ civilians still alive.

7. Osama bin Laden has the greatest right to fly the "Mission Accomplished" banner of anyone.
The US invasion of Iraq was a bonus ... since bin Laden had enmity towards the secular regime of Saddam Hussein. The erosion of civil liberties, the enormous leap in oil prices, the breakdown in US foreign relations, the massive drain on the Treasury and the enormous increase in the Federal Debt ... a "win" for bin Laden in every respect.

13. The most successful attack on the US ever
Edited on Mon Sep-08-08 12:49 PM by Neo
Al Qaeda's goal was to inspire fear and terror into the populous and government suppression on civil liberties. * was such as easily manipulative target the repercussions will be felt for many years to come. Japan’s Pearl Harbor attack was initially successful as the objective was to bring the US into the war but was ultimately lost 4 years later when they surrendered. Here we are 7 years later and Al Qaeda is still controlling BushCo. All we did in retaliation was create a safe haven for them in Iraq and Afghanistan is still volatile and unstable.

His purpose was to provoke a response from the United States that would drive the Islamic world into chaos. Osama had the good fortune of having the Bush Leaguers in power at the time. It worked beyond his wildest dreams. His influence on events increased and, instead of going after Osama, the Bush Leaguers used the attacks to launch an invasion of Iraq, fulfilling a long desired neoconservative wet dream Osama has sanctuary in the Hindu Kush; the United States is tied down in a failed imperial operation in Iraq; and the US is more despised by the common people of the Middle East than ever,

Mission accomplished.

19. The Republican Party has Failed America
This includes not just Bush, but McCain for enabling Bush, allowing the distraction of Iraq to happen...nay even promoting it. McCain actively pushed the idea that Saddam was involved with 9/11.

The biggest terrorist attack in history, and on our biggest and most important city, and a visible landmark and represntation of our nation, and the man behind it all remains free and at large as we stand mired in Iraq and the Republican party itself on numerous occasions has said that Bin Laden "isn't relevant"

They have failed every single American and done a disservice to those that died and those that lost family members by ignoring the true villain, and creating distraction after distraction to cover their incompetence.

20. I would invite you to consider the following:

1) For a jihadist, 9/11 would have been a triumph against the infidel Americans unequaled in in its enormity and effect. Why would the jihadist repeat that "I didn't do that." That was his moment of glory. That's what it's all about.

2) Osama bin Laden has most likely been dead since 2003-2004. "He's dead, Jim."

There is much more to consider, but this should do for openers.

And, yes, the perpetrators have gotten away with the 9/11 attack, so far.

Powerful explosives brought down the twin towers, not those planes which crash there. Al Qaida can't have access to such powerful explosives. And the FBI do not have evidence claiming that bin Laden did 9/11:

I am not defending bin Laden, he is a terrorist, and I do not sympathize terrorists. But there is something not right about this.

27. There's alot to be said for the fact that OBL used to work for us.
CIA name Tim Osman. Who's to say he STOPPED working for us? God knows he's been cornered, and our forces being ordered to stand down when he's within reach.

It's also interesting to note that an American hospital in Dubai is listed as having OBL as a patient in July 2001 - and according to this claim, a CIA agent met up with him while he was there.

I think alot of people forget that we trained him and that he was a valuable informant for us.

I've been researching the hell out of the PNAC/Saudi Arabia/Bush/Bandar/BinLaden for years; and all I can say is that all voting Americans should be required to read the PNAC's document entitled "Rebuilding America's Defenses". And then be tested on it. If someone can read that, pass the test, and still vote Republican.....

30. No, PNAC & the neocons got away with attacking us on 9/11
Look at the neocons in high places in the early bushit misadministration:

Dick Cheney - Vice President

Donald Rumsfeld - US Secretary of Defense

Paul Wolfowitz - Deputy Secretary of Defense

Douglas Feith - Under Secretary of Defense for Policy

Condoleeza Rice - National Security Advisor

Scooter Libby - is a former Assistant to the President of the United States, George W. Bush, Chief of Staff to the Vice President of the United States, Dick Cheney, and Assistant to the Vice President for National Security Affairs, serving from 2001 to 2005.

Now tell me... who gained the most from the attacks of 9-11?

38. Yeah, if you're going to have a war on terror, you have to know who the REAL
terrorists are. Just looking around at WHO has all the WMD, who has vast intelligence networks and sleeper cells all over the planet, who stands to PROFIT by "unending war", who now has a first strike policy, who has a gestapo-like HLS, who has invaded two sovereign nations, instituted rendition and torture -- doesn't take long to figure it out. Personally, I'm all for having a real war on terror -- starting with this administration and following the tentacles all the way up.

It seems most people here at DU, though, are as clueless and closed minded about all this as the repugs are about everything else.

Wonder why that is? They've lied about EVERYTHING but told the truth about 9/11. Go figure.

We've turned on each other (after originally being so pissed off about 9/11 that many on the left backed Bush's anti-terrorism rhetoric for awhile).

Bin Laden waited until we had an idiot in the White House. Then the idiot took all that anger and bipartisan unity and used it to invade Iraq -- the biggest foreign policy blunder in U.S. history.

The score:

Bin Laden 1
Neocons 1
America 0

37. FBI says, "No hard evidence connecting bin Laden to 9/11"
Edited on Mon Sep-08-08 07:23 PM by Beam Me Up

FBI says, “No hard evidence connecting Bin Laden to 9/11”

June 6, 2006 – This past weekend, a thought provoking e-mail circulated through Internet news groups, and was sent to the Muckraker Report by Mr. Paul V. Sheridan (Winner of the 2005 Civil Justice Foundation Award), bringing attention to the FBI’s Most Wanted Terrorist web page for Usama Bin Laden.<1> (See bottom of this web page for Most Wanted page) In the e-mail, the question is asked, “Why doesn’t Usama Bin Laden’s Most Wanted poster make any direct connection with the events of September 11, 2001?” The FBI says on its Bin Laden web page that Usama Bin Laden is wanted in connection with the August 7, 1998 bombings of the United States Embassies in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and Nairobi, Kenya. According to the FBI, these attacks killed over 200 people. The FBI concludes its reason for “wanting” Bin Laden by saying, “In addition, Bin Laden is a suspect in other terrorists attacks throughout the world.”

On June 5, 2006, the Muckraker Report contacted the FBI Headquarters, (202) 324-3000, to learn why Bin Laden’s Most Wanted poster did not indicate that Usama was also wanted in connection with 9/11. The Muckraker Report spoke with Rex Tomb, Chief of Investigative Publicity for the FBI. When asked why there is no mention of 9/11 on Bin Laden’s Most Wanted web page, Tomb said, “The reason why 9/11 is not mentioned on Usama Bin Laden’s Most Wanted page is because the FBI has no hard evidence connecting Bin Laden to 9/11.”

Surprised by the ease in which this FBI spokesman made such an astonishing statement, I asked, “How this was possible?” Tomb continued, “Bin Laden has not been formally charged in connection to 9/11.” I asked, “How does that work?” Tomb continued, “The FBI gathers evidence. Once evidence is gathered, it is turned over to the Department of Justice. The Department of Justice than decides whether it has enough evidence to present to a federal grand jury. In the case of the 1998 United States Embassies being bombed, Bin Laden has been formally indicted and charged by a grand jury. He has not been formally indicted and charged in connection with 9/11 because the FBI has no hard evidence connected Bin Laden to 9/11.”

It shouldn’t take long before the full meaning of these FBI statements start to prick your brain and raise your blood pressure. If you think the way I think, in quick order you will be wrestling with a barrage of very powerful questions that must be answered. First and foremost, if the U.S. government does not have enough hard evidence connecting Bin Laden to 9/11, how is it possible that it had enough evidence to invade Afghanistan to “smoke him out of his cave?” The federal government claims to have invaded Afghanistan to “root out” Bin Laden and the Taliban. Through the talking heads in the mainstream media, the Bush Administration told the American people that Usama Bin Laden was Public Enemy Number One and responsible for the deaths of nearly 3000 people on
