RNC becomes Gustav/Hannah telethon.
I know people are having fun with their having to change their convention plans. I think what I say in my subject line is the most probable outcome from this collision of events.

Does anyone think the republicans are not cynical enough to turn a catastrophe to their advantage? Anyone think they won't use this time to show mrs. palin in a sympathetic light? The soccer mom running around donating blood, collecting money and clothes? Hell, she can get hubby and kids in there and no one will say anything about youngest child.

Hello. Watch for the telethon aspect.

3. I think you are probably right...
That and using the disaster as a backdrop for their acceptence speeches. I hope people won't forget how much more harm they are doing just by showing up at the disaster scene.

4. good luck with the logistics there. and they sure as hell don't need over 10k phone answerers
seems pretty unlikely to actually happen, at least not in any serious sense. i don't doubt they'll try to get some sort of political theater out of it, i just don't see the massive "RNC Telethon" working out very well.

6. My apologies. I didn't mean to imply it would be in "any serious sense"
Just that this would be the way they'll spin it.

13. They won't have people waiting by phones
Instead, they'll just ask people to mail in their donations. They'll say, "Just make out your checks to the Republican National Committee."

And suuuuuuure, the hurricane victims will get that money. No, really...they will! :eyes:

5. All we're going to hear about is 'character'
McCain's character, Palin's character, Republicans with character, etc. in the face of this hurricane. I'm calling it!

7. Yes, I am cynical enough to think that.
There was this suggestion being floated around within the GOP that was published by CNN and made me boiling mad. They were saying that maybe they'd pass around a bucket on the delegate floor. OMFG, just the fact that it is essentially the collection tin and it's a passive-aggressive way to claim American traits of charity for themselves after we just re-claimed patriotism and honor from them for all Americans. Ugh!

:puke:

8. It would work far better than we think.
It is a win all around, there is no downside for them.

9. Why not call in some favors from their Big Oil buddies?
With all those record profits they've been raking in, surely they could pinch in a little bit.

But no, they're going to ask people who can't afford to give to reach into their pockets and give anyways.

It will be just like a fucking televangelest show.

And much more sincere, I might add.

12. I think that's what made me think of this, as a matter of fact.
Thank you for reminding us when a real telethon takes place.
