Bush Seeks to Affirm a Continuing War on Terror
By ERIC LICHTBLAU
Published: August 29, 2008

WASHINGTON — Tucked deep into a recent proposal from the Bush administration is a provision that has received almost no public attention, yet in many ways captures one of President Bush’s defining legacies: an affirmation that the United States is still at war with Al Qaeda.

Seven years after the Sept. 11 attacks, Mr. Bush’s advisers assert that many Americans may have forgotten that. So they want Congress to say so and “acknowledge again and explicitly that this nation remains engaged in an armed conflict with Al Qaeda, the Taliban, and associated organizations, who have already proclaimed themselves at war with us and who are dedicated to the slaughter of Americans.”

The language, part of a proposal for hearing legal appeals from detainees at the United States naval base at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, goes beyond political symbolism. Echoing a measure that Congress passed just days after the Sept. 11 attacks, it carries significant legal and public policy implications for Mr. Bush, and potentially his successor, to claim the imprimatur of Congress to use the tools of war, including detention, interrogation and surveillance, against the enemy, legal and political analysts say.

Some lawmakers are concerned that the administration’s effort to declare anew a war footing is an 11th-hour maneuver to re-establish its broad interpretation of the president’s wartime powers, even in the face of challenges from the Supreme Court and Congress.

4. Nothing! Just look at the distractions
they have put out for us. A tin soldier running for president and his beauty queen VP candidate. And Cheney Dick in his secret bunker mapping out more crap to throw at us. This administration will never become irrelevant as long as they are still in office. There is still mischief afoot.

19. I've been saying that since, well, since half the people here started
dismissing Bush as being a lame duck as much as a year ago.

This crowd will be a danger even long after January 20 - which is why we CANNOT let them off the hook for their crimes.

35. Don't forget the swat police raids! Secret Warrants!
Fire code violations that deserve a swat-team response of 25-30 officers, assault weapons on display!

Disruption of the RNC by dissenters, oh my! Smells just like Rove, no?

While the raids indeed are serious, I'd say a "state of perpetual war" is hierarchically superior.

5. Justification for the upcoming debacle over Iran?
You gotta watch these people all the time. I'm suspicious that they'll use this to later claim that their 'war on terror' was re-affirmed by law, and then use it to justify an attack/blockade of Iran.

Wouldn't put it past them....

7. Welcome to DU northsongs...
and you are so right about us having to keep an eye on them, now more than ever as their time is running out. Try Googling "Directive 51" and you will see what they can do in their waning months.

Presidential Directive 51 is an Executive Order signed by Bush that can give him "dictatorial powers" in the event of a natural or man made disaster that affects the USA. It will also allow him to CALL OFF THE ELECTION!! And the disaster can be anything from a nuclear attack to another Katrina to a blackout in any city to a California forest fire.

13. It was Bush who said,
"Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we." —Washington, D.C., Aug. 5, 2004

to attack any country that may be interfering with their efforts in Iraq. Robert Byrd kept saying this over and over again in his most eloquent speeches.

They want another war they can leave the next administration, to tie their hands as much as possible in order to prevent the reversal of disastrous policies. And to make a killing, in at least 2 ways.
