Right Wing Watch: Joel's Army, The Call, Todd Bentley are "Arming for Armageddon"
From Right Wing Watch:

Joel's Army and The Call

We wrote about The Call a few times before their before their rally on the National Mall earlier this month, but the Southern Poverty Law Center has released a fascinating new report entitled "Arming" for Armageddon that puts its activities in an entirely new light.

It turns out that The Call and its founder Lou Engle are closely aligned with a militant Christian dominionist movement called "Joel's Army" run by self-proclaimed prophet and faith-healer Todd Bentley:

Joel's Army believers are hard-core Christian dominionists, meaning they believe that America, along with the rest of the world, should be governed by conservative Christians and a conservative Christian interpretation of biblical law. There is no room in their doctrine for democracy or pluralism.

This part gets a little scary.

"I believe we're headed to an Elijah/Jezebel showdown on the Earth, not just in America but all over the globe, and the main warriors will be the prophets of Baal versus the prophets of God, and there will be no middle ground," said Engle. He was referring to the Baal of the Old Testament, a pagan idol whose followers were slaughtered under orders from the prophet Elijah.

"There's an Elijah generation that's going to be the forerunners for the coming of Jesus, a generation marked not by their niceness but by the intensity of their passion," Engle continued. "The kingdom of heaven suffers violence and the violent take it by force. Such force demands an equal response, and Jesus is going to make war on everything that hinders love, with his eyes blazing fire."

From the Southern Poverty Law Center. There is fear that there is really some arising militancy in Bentley's Joel's Army.

Arming for Armageddon

Tattooed across his sternum are military dog tags that read "Joel's Army." They're evidence of Bentley's generalship in a rapidly growing apocalyptic movement that's gone largely unnoticed by watchdogs of the theocratic right. According to Bentley and a handful of other "hyper-charismatic" preachers advancing the same agenda, Joel's Army is prophesied to become an Armageddon-ready military force of young people with a divine mandate to physically impose Christian "dominion" on non-believers.

Joel's Army followers, many of them teenagers and young adults who believe they're members of the final generation to come of age before the end of the world, are breaking away in droves from mainline Pentecostal churches. Numbering in the tens of thousands, they base their beliefs on an esoteric reading of the second chapter of the Old Testament Book of Joel, in which an avenging swarm of locusts attacks Israel. In their view, the locusts are a metaphor for Joel's Army.

Despite their overt militancy, there's no evidence Joel's Army followers have committed any acts of violence. But critics warn that actual bloodletting may only be a matter of time for a movement that casts itself as God's avenging army.

Todd Bentley had a Lakeland, Florida, revival for months...he attracted about 35,000 a week. Many of them were from overseas. We met two girls from Switzerland who came to see him. Oddly enough they were thrilled to get Obama bumper stickers we gave them.

Bentley is closing up shop here since his marital indiscretions were recently made public. But the movement is still going on in the area.

Evangelist's Florida revival making local Pentecostal leaders very nervous.

He is getting money they need instead, and drawing crowds away from their churches. The local preachers began speaking out publicly when Bentley started claiming to raise the dead.

Storms of another kind - doubts about claims of healings and criticism of his teachings and techniques - have not troubled Canadian evangelist Todd Bentley and the leaders of the Florida Outpouring revival, which continues on, now in its 82nd consecutive day. The revival seems set to meet in the tents at Sun 'n Fun for the indefinite future, even though some national and local Pentecostal leaders are wary of giving approval to it.

..."The Pentecostal revival, which began April 2 at Ignited Church in Lakeland, draws an average of 30,000 or more people each week, according to its leaders, with about 50 percent of those from outside the state. In fact, it has become an international phenomenon, and almost a third of the crowds come from outside the United States, leaders estimate. At this particular evening service, flags from eight nations waved above the crowd, which numbered at least 4,000.

..."While faith healing is a part of the Pentecostal tradition, the claims of resurrections have raised eyebrows. No dead bodies have been brought into the revival. Rather, reports of the recent death of a loved one - in some cases located long distances away - are relayed to the stage by e-mail or cell phone, and Bentley has led prayers for the person to be revived.

From an earlier post I made... this statement is telling.

Tonight, visiting evangelist Todd Bentley says he has been told by a prophet, Bob Jones, that 13 wise virgins would carry the revival forward. So Bentley calls teenagers up to the stage and "anoints" them, touching them and watching many fall backward, a practice Pentecostals call being "slain in the Spirit." It's just the beginning of an hours-long service.

The group named The Call "is a kind of youth-oriented spin-off of the Promise Keepers 1997’s rally on the National Mall that claims to be less about politics and more about “fasting and prayer for the benefit of the nation.” Of course, that claim is somewhat undermined by the fact that The Call first came to DC just before the presidential election in 2000 because, according to their own video, “the crisis was so real we knew that the nation was a stake and the only hope was massive fasting and prayer.” And wouldn’t you know it, eight years later, just before another presidential election, The Call is coming back to DC."

1. "youth-oriented" .....hmmmm
Sweet for him no doubt, considering he is a convicted child molester.

These freaks would be calling for the death penalty for anyone else, but this guy gets a total pass because he talks to angels and feeds directly into their fantasy world.

Maybe all the preachers here heard about that. They sure did get upset with him suddenly.

7. I can't wait for the sex scandal to come out on this guy
You know he's banging virgins two at a time...for Christ, you know.

Oh, and if armed Christians ever came to my front door in order to impose their religion on me, they might find themselves rudely deprived of corporeal existence in a rapid, auto-loading fashion.

Jeesh. Nuts like this think the whole world is comprised of sheep, just because that's the type of person they attract.

His virgins were of the 7 year old boy variety but that's A-OK with the narcissistic nuts who follow him and want to believe the bullshit he's selling.

22. Yeah, that makes sense
Anyone who knows anything about the religious right understands their misogynistic view of women. And I read somewhere else that her husband works for BP Oil. So even as VP, Palin puts another oil man in the WH...along with the Dominionist agenda.

:nuke:

The librul media isn't going to say a word about any of this. I hope the Obama camp does. It's scary shit and Americans deserve to know about it before going to the polls. Hell, they deserve to know everything about the Dominionists, period.

29. Bentley is one of the most evil pieces of shit I have ever seen. Ever.
I started tracking his activities a few months ago on Religion News Blog, which has the SLC story up today. Go there and search for Bentley stories and you will find lots of clips of his services. Or just do a YouTube search.

The clips made my blood freeze. It's not the satanic biker look per se that makes Bentley chilling as much as it is his statements. Though I am not a believer I was raised Catholic, and I know the difference between biblical teachings and New Age mishmash. His followers clearly do not.

According to him, Todd Bentley is attended by angels who literally shower him with gold and precious gems. His claims about raising the dead have never been substantiated (duh) yet people swallow them whole. Countless believers embrace his "Fresh Fire" theology, an emotionally intoxicating blend of Prosperity Gospel, World of Warcraft-style magic and est-like human potential psychology, all delivered in a manner that would be right at home at any white power rally.

That Sarah Palin's church is connected with Joel's Army is bad news, but good news too. Bad if she wins. But good if the word is spread quickly to as many people as possible. Because as popular as this new generation of Christian quackery may be, most Christians, and most Americans, recoil from its extremism. And they will reject anyone who could increase its influence on their lives.

I have already started alerting my friends to the Palin-Bentley connection. I urge everyone here to do the same.

34. Hope I wasn't misleading
My source for the Palin-Bentley connection is the Daily Kos diary that DouglasCarpenter linked to - the same thread countryjake just pointed out. Here is the DK link:
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/8/29/163234/559/495/579213

The connection is tenuous: it is not Palin herself but her current church that is implicated. But the senior pastor there, Mike Rose, definitely embraces End Times theology. And if you read the diary entry you'll find enough other things Palin is involved in to suggest she buys into the whole fundy package: possible involvement with Feminists for Life, a front for a private adoption industry that runs halfway houses for pregnant teens who are pressured to give up their babies; definite involvement with Fellowship of Christian Athletes, a school-based group linked to the notorious cult Campus Crusaders for Christ.

Other blogs have been picking up both the DK post and the SLC article, and some are linking Palin directly to Joel's Army. That link hasn't been established. But if Obama can be smeared with things his pastor said - well, sauce for the gander as well as the goose.

These folks scare me for their Dominionist and End Times aspirations. But I see them as the new wave of Prosperity Gospel con artists, following in the footsteps of rip-off artists like Benny Hinn and Rod Parsley, so their appeal is limited. Of course Ohioan Parsley is very involved in the Christian conservative GOTV effort, and worked closely with Ken Blackwell in 2004. And the late, unlamented D. James Kennedy headed up those efforts in Florida. While a lot of evangelicals subscribe to these charlatans, even more reject them, and Prosperity Gospel, as non-biblical and a perversion of Christ's teachings. I am hoping Christians see the same in people like Bentley, who has already fouled the nest where the suckers lay his golden eggs.

For Bentley and his ilk, it's all about power and money. It's not about the beliefs at all. They're just the hook these guys use to pull in the rubes. To me the scariest of them all isn't even a preacher. It's Newt Gingrich, who has been courting the Christian Right with every means at his disposal. I had really, really hoped Newt would run this year so he would be exposed. But alas.

If ya like to scare yourself - and who doesn't? - I recommend reading "Through a glass, darkly: How the Christian right is reimagining U.S. history", an excellent piece by Jeff Sharlet published in Harper's December 2006 issue. I can't recommended it highly enough.

Oh, and thanks for posting the SLC story. Everyone should read it.

37. No, I understood it was a church connection.
McCain is pandering to the extreme right wing religious people who have been used by the GOP to win for too long.

I think Bentley embarrassed the local ministries who are pretty extreme themselves....they sort of got a look in the mirror at what their religious views had unleashed.

35. If any are wondering why Canada's version of Hell's Angels for Christ left Canada for Florida....
It's because Canadian Fundies know a flim flammer
when they see one. Todd apparently has a problem
keeping his dick in his pants when it comes to the
female faithful.

http://www.freshfire.ca/

We wish to acknowledge, however, that since our last statement from the Fresh Fire Board of Directors, we have discovered new information revealing that Todd Bentley has entered into an unhealthy relationship on an emotional level with a female member of his staff. In light of this new information and in consultation with his leaders and advisors, Todd Bentley has agreed to step down from his position on the Board of Directors and to refrain from all public ministry for a season to receive counsel in his personal life.

36. No one joins a cult - they are recruited
That is what cult experts will tell you. As someone who lost a brother for many years to the grasp of an insidious, worldwide cult, I wholeheartedly agree.

My parents didn't "raise a cultist." They raised five kids and one of them was lured into a cult. Blame them if you like, but it does not explain why the rest of us did not join cults.

The Rick Ross Institute is an excellent resource for cult research and awareness of recruitment techniques. If you want to understand how people end up in cults, and how to avoid the same fate, please read their page on Cults: Public Perceptions vs. Research.
