made much more than $50 per hour.

I wonder how much he thinks the help around any of his seven different houses make?

67. that is EXACTLY why I believe this story has to go viral NOW!!
There are some really big myths perpetrated by the media about John McCain. One of them is that he is a maverick and a moderate. Another is that he is some kind of foreign policy expert - Good Lord, he couldn't pass good eighth grade geography quiz. And three - that he is just an ordinary guy who has something in common with ordinary Americans

54. Mc Cain defined "rich" as 5 million annual income.
I guess middle class means 3 million a year, Obama replied.

20. this is the kind of elitism I have heard from upper classes in third world countries
I live in the Philippines part of the year. And I have found that most upper class Filipinos in spite of driving miles past incredible poverty every single day of their life, in spite of employing lots of people from the overwhelmingly poor majority - they just live in an unreality that assumes "every body" lives just like them in gated communities and ostentatious wealth with children all going to elite private schools.

And they believe this illusion in spite of being confronted with reality on all sides every single day of their lives.

When John McCain posited that 5 million dollars per year is what defined someone as rich. I think that he genuinely believes that. Just as John McCain genuinely thinks undocumented Mexican farm workers make $50 per hour and average working Americans must make double that.

There's not much work available these days for an older woman with a long career in the newspaper business.

Of the six papers I worked for, only one still exists -- and its staff was just told that if 26% of them don't take a buyout, the paper will be sold.

He'd happily pick lettuce for $25 an hour. Hell, I'd happily pick lettuce, too!

Seriously, is McCain THAT clueless??? (this is a rhetorical question, of course) They only pay about 3 bucks an hour for picking produce, I thought, which is mainly why Americans aren't willing to do the job. McCain's $50/hr figure shows how astonishingly clueless he is about what things really cost and how much people get paid. I guess when you're wealthy enough to live on accounts, you lose all concept of pricing. But the thing that really busts my chops is that they're trying to paint Obama as the elitist one!

McCain is an arrogant swine.

51. hey now, let's not be undercutting. The man offered $50 don't give him a deal
Because next thing you know some asshole will be starting a temp agency, charging $50 bucks an hour, collecting $25 off the top and then giving the worker only $25.

It pisses me off that we're all (myself included) so scared of losing our jobs that we're willing to get screwed over by the threat that if we don't take a paltry wage some other guy will be grateful for the chance to get screwed even worse by doing the same job for less than us.

I'd love to see unionism rise again but I fear it will take some very dire conditions before people are able to reverse the anti-union mindset that's taken over the country.

And this is something you might want to include as well:

Why the McCain house gaffe matters

I STONGLY RECOMMEND READING AND SAVING THE ORIGINAL ARTICLE AND SENDING IT TO EVERYONE ON YOUR ADDRESS LIST

link:

http://roguecolumnist.typepad.com/rogue_columnist/2008/...

please note: I added the references below from the links embedded in the original article

http://roguecolumnist.typepad.com/rogue_columnist/2008/...

President-elect McCain's inability to recall how many houses.(1) he owns fits into a larger and more troubling pattern. The problem is not just that he is an out-of-touch rich guy.

This is the candidate who repeatedly confused Shiite and Sunni (2)-- all the while trumpeting his expertise on the Middle East. At one point, his sock puppet Joe Lieberman had to whisper the facts in his ear.(3) He couldn't tell Sudan from Somalia.(4) He kept talking about a nation that hasn't existed for years.(5) Iraq and Pakistan share a border, the senator wrongly said, and the Sunni awakening happened 'after' the surge (6) (edited out by CBS (7)). He said he didn't know much about economics,(8) then denied saying such a thing. He spoke of a withdrawal timetable one day, then denied saying it later. He volunteered Cindy for a topless contest.(9) Then there was the stupendous dead space and mumbling when he was questioned about claiming Obama was playing the race card.(10) He claimed he walked through Baghdad without body armor or protection, etc., etc.(11) Most of this has been captured on tape.

What's going on? Neither obvious answer is comforting. He's either going senile as he nears 72, or he's lying and unprepared on critical issues without realizing how easily this can be caught in a YouTube era. (Whether the duhs and ignos -- those 'undecided voters' and angry Clintonites -- will care, is another, depressing matter). Either one of these answers should disqualify him for the White House, particularly because so many of his misstatements, confusions and subsequent lies come about issues where he claims superior experience and judgment.

But next consider all his flip flops, over torture, warrantless wiretapping, tax cuts, Social Security, abortion rights, engaging with Hamas, nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain, offshore drilling, etc. Once the presumptive nominee, he said Social Security was "an absolute disgrace.'(12) His chief economic adviser and likely Treasury secretary called Americans a 'nation of whiners' and said the recession was in our heads.(13) This from a rich man who helped deregulate banking, profited from it, then profited again from the current deregulated banking crisis. Soon after McCain reversed course to support drilling, oil industry contributions poured in.(14)

The above is not a disjointed laundry list. When we combine it with McCain's obvious mental fatigue, the really disturbing picture comes clear.

including the 15 acre "ranch". He claims to have paid people $273,000 to take care of them last year.

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0808/12700.html

That sounds like a lot of money, but let's see: 7 houses; dusted, kitchen stocked, linens fresh ready 24/7 for the McCain's to drop in on their private jet, that's all for roughly $30,000 a year each.

You got to figure Cindy doesn't do the cooking or laundry.......

How much you want to bet he pays people cash under the table to take care of his houses? I'll offer double or nothing they don't all have green cards, either.

There are three basic falsehoods the media has been promoting about John McCain. There are plenty of others. But these three are the most patently ridiculous and most frequently repeated:

1. He is a maverick/moderate Republican

2. He is an ordinary guy - just like most Americans

3. He is a foreign policy expert. Good God!! He couldn't pass a good eighth grade geography exam

These falsehood must be exposed for what they are

be prepared for the nitpickers who say McCain stipulates it's just for the harvest season.

I still think it's plenty obvious that there are millions upon millions of Americans from all walks of life who'd pay their own way to get to the crops, and pay for temporary housing, in order to get a harvest season's worth of 50 dollar/hour pay.

he was questioned and challenged and he repeated and repeated the claim

He just had no idea what kind of income ordinary Americans made.

There is no possible way ANYONE can listen to his comments which he firmly stood his ground on when challenged - and conclude that he meant $5 per hour.

He genuinely thought that most Americans made a lot more than $50 per hour. It is impossible to listen to his comments and conclude otherwise.

they should have had this on the (dinner) table long before the convention, so that the public would have some inkling about this.

hope they're going to incorporate it into some sort of 'out of touch on the economy' theme

it SHOULD be easy, especially since there's so much out there in his own words, as well as those of his top advisors and buddies (Gramm and Bush, for starters)

36. $50 an Hour to Pick Lettuce? You Bet (AFLCIONOW/April 2006)
by Tula Connell, Apr 5, 2006

... McCain then offered anybody in the crowd $50 an hour to pick lettuce in Arizona.

When some union leaders said theyd accept his offer, the expensive-suited Washington, D.C., politician insisted none of them would do such menial labor for a complete season.

Said McCain: You cant do it, my friends.

Anyone taking bets on whether McCain or building and construction trades guys would last longer working in the hot sun for 12 hours a day?

38. McCain's lettuce-picking remarks yield unwanted green (April 2006)
Arizona Daily Star
Tucson, Arizona
Published: 04.15.2006

... McCain has been getting skewered in the media for comments earlier this month to a union group in Washington, D.C., that immigrants are taking jobs no one else wants, and offered them $50 an hour to pick lettuce in the Arizona sun for a summer, suggesting they couldn't do it.

The senator didn't stick around long enough to process any applications, despite several offers to take him up on his offer from the audience.

So Friday more than three dozen demonstrators showed up at his office, many carrying lettuce picker applications in one hand, and a head of lettuce in the other to show they could do the job ...

I am a union President and I get so many men and women looking for work, I can't count them.

recently, a very strong young man came to me from a friend who wanted to work on a garbage truck. The local union that represents them are Teamsters. The pay, to start in $18.50 an hour with health care after six months. The waiting list is two years. Americans will throw garbage in the 90 degree heat of summer and the freezing temperatures of wither for $45,000 a year.

However, if the pay were cut to $8.50 an hour with no benefits, which amounts to $17,000 a year, you now have a job Americans won't do.

Why does the free market only work for their side? Why can't it also work for our side?

Ok, this man is so out of touch with America. Does he rent out space

$50 an hour x 40 hours (52 weeks)= is $104,000 annually.

Man, McCain must think that bank tellers, mail carriers and dental hygienists are millionaires!

You'll have to live in the company barracks and pay $200 a night to sleep there. You must shop in the company store where a loaf of bread costs $100. The only diner in town, the company diner of course, will set you back $350 for a couple eggs and some bacon.

81. Fresh air, no stress,
No shade, no breaks...

People die harvesting vegetables. It has become depressingly common, in the Central Valley in California-- every summer, people die.

Undocumented workers have jobs because fear of La Migra makes them easy to exploit. Enforce the labor codes across the board, without discriminating against immigrants, and the "advantage" immigrants have in getting jobs evaporates.

On the other hand, if we start paying $50/hour to pick lettuce, salad becomes something we'll only eat on birthdays.

If lettuce became expensive, then the other non lettuce producing jobs would have to pay enough for people to afford lettuce, or give them enough free time to allow people to plant their own lettuce.

ever. And the 10-fold price increase of lettuce doesn't matter because we're talking 10-fold increase in salaries here... across the economy of course. According to McHouses.
