I've been away....need a number.
Been out of the country... in beautiful Canadian waters... for three weeks (more about that in a separate post).

My semi-fundie BIL just sent me a picture of the new canopy he just got for his mini-tractor. At the bottom of the pic it said "My new canopy curtecy of G. W. Bush"... obviously he spent his stimulus money on it.

I want to ship him something about how he got his canopy, but his share of the Bush deficit is " X dollars".

I've done all the Googling I can for one night... help me out.

4. It's at least $4,500
Here's a http://www.cbo.gov/budget/historical.pdf|report> from the Congressional Budget Office that has the basic information. I looked at the first chart, titled "Revenues, Outlays, Surpluses, Deficits, and Debt Held by the Public, 1962 to 2006".

We see that Clinton inherited a very bad situation. After twelve years of Reagan and Bush, the deficit in 1992, the last full year of their depredations, was $290.3 billion. Clinton reduced that deficit every year and got the budget into surplus in 1998, 1999, and 2000.

Then came Bush. In 2001 the surplus fell to $128.2 billion. Every year since then has been a deficit.

So, let's charitably give Bush credit for 2001, when he didn't manage to blow all of the surplus he'd inherited. Adding the surplus for 2001 with the accumulated deficits of 2002-06 gives a net for Bush's first six years of negative $1,386.4 billion -- in other words, a deficit of almost $1.4 trillion. I'm sure that 2007 added more red ink but I don't happen to have a link handy. There's also no chance that the final figure for 2008 will be anything but a deficit.

The U.S. population is currently estimated at about 305,000,000. (The Census Bureau has an that updates automatically. As I look at it now it's at 304,954,770 but it will be higher by the time you read this, so I'll just use 305 million for convenience.) The first six years of Bush, divided among 305 million people, produce a per-person deficit of $4,545.57.

You'd be on safe ground telling him it's more than $4,500. Be sure to stress that you're not telling him his share of the total deficit -- only his share of the net addition to the deficit by Bush in his first six years.

By the way, the stimulus had to be enacted by Congress. Ask your BIL how many canopies he bought with the money he received when the Republicans controlled both houses of Congress.
