1. Saddam was not only a mean leader, he was dumb as a rock.
The U.S. invasion could have been avoided if he had realized earlier the nature of Bush's true intentions. He should have immediately completely opened up Iraq to any and all news people and diplomats, maybe even tourist. Had the Country be flooded with news people and inspectors from early on, it would have publicly "cut Bush off at that pass". Instead, he played coy until it was too late to stop the Juggernaut. That was dumb.

3. I agreed with Saddam when he challenged GWB to a gun duel rather than involve nations in the fight.
GWB should've taken Saddam up on his offer, since he likes the persona of the Texas cowboy with the six-shooter. A whole lot of people would've lived if it had just been a gun fight between those two.

4. Yup. Saddam played right into Bush's hands.
Open the country, allow the scientists to be interviewed out of the country, allow both the inspectors & the press access to all the supposed WMD sites.

He could have outplayed Bush, but he didn't realize this wasn't a bluff. Stupid fool.

6. Bush** was going to invade no matter what Saddam did
Everything was set in motion after 9-11. Bush** was not going to be dissuaded by anything Iraq did to comply; the administration cast doubt on every bit of evidence that weakened its push for war.

By late summer 2002, invasion was a fait accompli.
