New Mexico: Cockfighting Ban Goes to Governor

A bill outlawing cockfighting received legislative approval when the State Senate concurred with a measure approved in the House. Gov. Bill Richardson, a Democrat, has indicated he will sign the measure into law. Animal protection advocates had tried for almost two decades to ban the sport, but their efforts were frustrated by rural legislators who argued that cockfighting was part of New Mexico’s culture. The bill says that first and second violations of the ban would be misdemeanors, and that subsequent convictions would be felonies. If the bill becomes law, Louisiana will be the only state in which cockfighting remains legal.



I can see Bush and Pelosi giving a joint sit down statement. "We in America are so much more moral than those people are. I can not bear the idea of any federal tax dollars going to such a place."

The Republics just don't care period. Why would they help out a state/city that, without its minority citizenry, will turn red?

And the Dems like to use us as a political football to show the world how the Republics don't care.

I think cock-fighting is the least of what anyone is concerned about.
