Tough times at DU?
Wow.

The new advertising layout of the site is a bit...overwhelming.

There are ads everywhere. What happened?

Was the last fund drive unsuccessful?

Hey, I'm all for using whatever means are necessary to keep DU up and running, and I click on ads, even if I'm not interested in the product, just to keep the cash flowing for my favorite site.

But today I logged on for the first time in about a week - and had trouble - literally - finding my way around the ads to get to the content.

So - what's up? Are times tough for DU? Because based solely on the number of ads and their placement - virtually everywhere within the site - it seems like DU must be in very, very hot financial water...

If you donate, the ads go away
Seems like a fair deal to me

3. Did you used to have a star? Donors can shut off most of the ads.

22. Yes, I did
But we've been a bit busy financially trying to assist our niece Brittani, who had a double lung transplant last May, who has now rejected her lungs and must have another transplant - and as an added bonus, her insurance has been canceled for reaching her "lifetime maximum benefits." So we've not had extra cash to donate to anyone.

I last donated about a year ago - didn't realize the donor stars went away, since I AM a donor (just not lately) - nor did I realize having a donor star eliminated the ads. I suppose this means I can no longer vote in polls, either...

DU to Donor: "What have you done for me lately?"

Message received.

25. I'm sorry that you are having hard times, but I don't understand your attitude about DU.
It costs a lot of money to keep this site up and running, and the Admins deserve to get paid for what they do, since they have no time for other jobs. The moderators are all volunteers.

If you asked folks on DU to donate on your behalf to give you a star, I know that lots of people would volunteer because I've seen it before. I've also donated stars to people who can't afford them. But your approach seems to be to react with anger that you have to endure ads to visit a site for which you pay nothing. I don't really get that...

I think you can vote in polls, too. You just can't post on some of the single-interest forums here. You can read them, though.

26. Its hard to keep your chin up
and hard not to view the world through a negative lens when the world is kicking your ass, when your 18 year old niece is the victim of corporate greed and you are helpless to do anything about it.

I apologize, to all who read this thread, for my bad attitude. Of course I did not mean to take it out on DU, and you are right to point out the fantastic job the DU mods do - and do for free. I understand the costs involved in running a site as large as DU, and do not begrudge the operators of the site any means they choose to keep the site operational. DU has saved my sanity, more than once...

28. You're a good person. I can only imagine how difficult things must be.
I'm sorry if my post was harsh. Thank you for responding. One of the gifts that DU gives is the opportunity to vent in a safe environment. You are in good company. I'm glad that someone gave you a star, too!

:hi:

Sending best wishes and hoping that things get better soon for you and your family.

13. I donated on
August 12, but my star was still removed, and I have all the annoying ads.

But I am not "concerned," in the sense of the "hard times" OP.

17. Well, ya got one now!
Do check with the admins why you lost your star despite a recent donation, just in case there be a bug in the system.

18. Many thanks.
I have communicated with Skinner. While I very much appreciate your kindness, I hope he will give me the star that should result from my check, and transfers the one you gave me to a deserving person. There are many good people here who are on a tighter budget than me, and I am always happy to donate.

If Skinner identifies the "bug," I would suggest that one solution might be to offer DU t-shirts reading: "H2O Man only asks that you conduct yourself in a civilized manner." Such a shirt would surely sell .... at least one.

15. 3 options for making ads disappear...
1. Donate, as so many have suggested, above
2. Firefox browser + Ad Block and/or No Script add ons....
3. Firefox/View/Page style/No Style/ makes page show only print/story content, with rare exceptions.

I use all three options for DU, and options 2 & 3 for most other web pages.

30. How do I do that?
Maybe a dumb question but I don't know that much about computers, really. What is java and what would turning it off do? Also, many here have Firefox and It sounds great but don't know the first thing about downloading it and a lot of the percs that many here seem to have. Internet explorer stinks. Could you direct me to any help on the subject?

20. Ever read a magazine?
Compared to reading a print magazine or a print newspaper, online reading is relatively free of commercial distractions. I barely notice them.

It takes whatever it takes to run this place, and maybe pay some salaries. If anyone is getting fat off this place, I don't see it. A site with the traffic and unique visitors this place has would command decent ad rates, but that's not huge money.

23. I don't see any changes. If you contribute you can hide the ads.
I allow the ads to be seen because it increases revenue for the Admins to run the site, but the ads don't bother me. I haven't seen any changes lately.

27. On the anniversary of my last DU donation all the ads appeared
in my browser while I was in DU. If you haven't donated in a year you pay your way by looking at ads. Sounds fair to me. At least all the functions still work for me and some of them didn't the last time I hadn't been a donor for a year.
